22 April 2024
Congratulations to Associate Professor Ravani Duggan and Associate Professor Justine Leavy, who have been accepted into the 2024 Provost Fellows Program. They were selected from a highly competitive pool and will each be awarded up to $10,000 towards their professional leadership development and work with the Provost on a University-wide strategic project over the next six months.
Dr Ravani Duggan is an Associate Professor in the Curtin School of Nursing, with a research joint appointment in the Centre for Nursing Research at Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group. She is a registered nurse and midwife with 28 years of experience as an educator and researcher, having worked in South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Australia. Ravani is an experienced qualitative researcher with previous projects in the areas of nursing and midwifery education, maternal and child health, and workforce. She leads the Mature Age Workforce Research Program, a collaborative initiative between the Curtin School of Nursing and Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group. This program explores the experiences of mature-age nurses and midwives employed within the health sector in Western Australia.
Provost Fellows project description: Female employment levels in Australia have increased over time with older women remaining employed. The result is that many of these workers in a university setting will experience menopausal transition while holding senior positions within teams or in their field. While the experience of menopausal transition varies, existing evidence indicates its potential to negatively impact workplace engagement. The proposed study aims to explore the menopausal transition experience of staff within Curtin University, using findings to inform targeted wellbeing initiatives to support Curtin as a healthy workplace.
Dr Justine Leavy is currently an Associate Professor in the Curtin School of Population Health. Justine is the Discipline Lead for Health Promotion and Sexology and a Research Fellow with Collaboration for Evidence, Research and Impact in Public Health. Her practice and research experience includes drowning prevention, physical activity promotion, knowledge translation, and ethics in health promotion. Justine is a member of International Drowning Research Alliance, co-founder on WADER-n the Western Australian Drowning Evaluation and Research Network, Fellow of the Australian Health Promotion Association and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a Board member of the Royal Life Saving Society (WA) and a member of the Mass Media Advisory Panel for the US National Physical Activity Plan. She was an Academic Board Member at Curtin University 2021-2023. Justine is a Run Director for parkrun Australia and enjoys volunteering for the Repair Café in her local community.
Provost Fellows project description: This project aims to investigate the most effective ways to conduct meaningful and impactful career conversations with Curtin University staff. It will use mixed methods, focusing on best practices, delivery, and implementation, to provide recommendations for enhancing staff engagement with the career conversation process and optimising opportunities for career progression.
We wish Ravani and Justine success as they work on their projects and look forward to sharing the outcomes of their projects.
