TAFE (VET) or other AQF qualifications

Graduating from TAFE or another Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) provider can qualify you for admission to Curtin.

AQF qualifications include certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas such as those offered through TAFE, Curtin College and other training institutions.

If you have an AQF qualification, you are eligible for admission to a range of Curtin courses. You must also ensure you meet our English language requirements and any course prerequisites.

AQF qualifications

Advanced diploma

An advanced diploma qualifies you for entry to Curtin courses with an ATAR of 70 or above and satisfies our English language requirements. This qualification will make your university application competitive for many courses and you may be eligible for credit toward your university study.

Diploma

A diploma qualifies you for entry to Curtin courses with an ATAR of 70 or above and satisfies our English language requirements. You may also be eligible for credit toward your university study.

Certificate IV

The certificate IV is the minimum requirement for university entry. It qualifies you for entry to Curtin courses with a 70 ATAR. You must also satisfy our English language requirements outlined below.

English language proficiency

If you have a certificate IV, you must provide separate evidence of English language proficiency. This can include achieving a scaled mark of at least 50 in a WACE English ATAR subject.

You can also meet English through a number of accepted English tests and qualifications, such as the Written English component of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).

If you are applying for a Curtin course via Portfolio entry, you can demonstrate English proficiency if you have achieved a grade A in a year 12 General English subject.

Prerequisites

For some courses, you need to have specific knowledge of certain subjects to be eligible for admission. These subjects are called prerequisites and are usually studied at ATAR level, or you may have studied the equivalent prerequisite through your AQF qualification.

Course prerequisites are listed under the admission criteria of each course page. If you’re unsure if you meet a prerequisite, send us an enquiry.

Advanced standing

If you have successfully completed units through your AQF qualification that relate to your Curtin course, you may be eligible for advanced standing (also known as credit for recognised learning or CRL). This exempts you from having to study those units again. Your total course fee will be reduced and you could complete the course in less time than the normal duration.
