The School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering delivers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and high-quality research in civil and mechanical engineering. Curtin is recognised internationally as a leader in graduate research studies and for the breadth and quality of its research higher degree programs and offers Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Civil Engineering

Civil and Construction Engineering involves the application of scientific and technological principles to the design and construction of facilities for the community such as: railways, harbours, roads, bridges, water supply and wastewater treatment, dams, mining construction, power projects, and buildings.

This discipline requires a strong background in the mathematical and physical sciences. Civil engineers work closely with planners, architects and environmental scientists.

In the US News & World Report Best Global University Rankings 2020, Curtin University ranked 37th in the world for Civil Engineering, and in the Australian Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2018 assessment, Curtin University ranked above world standard for Civil Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering permits us to harness the energy and forces that exist in nature, providing for the needs of society. The range of mechanical engineering is therefore vast; machines from the size of micro-mechanical devices through to massive power-generating turbines are covered by the discipline. Similarly, the flight and performance of modern aircraft is largely an accomplishment of mechanical engineering.

The Mechanical Engineering discipline also offers the Industrial and Systems Engineering major.

Mechatronic Engineering

Mechatronic engineers work in advanced manufacturing environments such as aerospace, biotechnology, robotics and agritechnology. With hybrid skills in mechanical, electrical and computer engineering, mechatronic engineers are in high demand for the jobs of the future.
