This is a call for nominations for the election of an academic staff member to the Council of Curtin University.
Council is the University’s governing body, established under the Curtin University Act 1966 (WA) (the “Act”). Council is responsible for the overall governance and effective management of the University. It normally meets seven times each year and meetings are normally held at Curtin Perth.
Section 9(1)(c) of the Act provides that the membership of Council shall include “One person who is a member of the academic staff of the University and who is elected by the academic staff of the University in the manner prescribed by Statute”.
This election is being conducted to fill a casual vacancy. The successful candidate will hold office until 31 March 2027.
Academic staff considering nominating for election are encouraged to read the University’s Corporate Governance Statement before nominating.
All members, whether appointed or elected, are required to act at all times in the best interests of the University.
The University encourages diversity on its committees and therefore particularly encourages nominations from people from diverse backgrounds.
All academic staff members appointed to continuing or fixed term contracts as academic staff of the University are eligible for election to Council.
All academic staff members appointed to continuing or fixed term contracts as academic staff of the University may nominate themselves, or another academic staff member, to be a candidate for this election.
Nominations are made using the nomination form which must be completed, signed and dated by both the nominee and nominator. The Returning Officer may reject any nomination that does not comply with the Statute.
A candidate who would like their candidature to be supported by a profile must, before close of nominations, give to the Returning Officer a statement that –
is in the English language and does not exceed 150 words in length;
is confined to a description of the candidate and the candidate’s skills, qualifications and experience relevant to the Council and does not contain information that could be considered to be false, misleading or defamatory;
includes the candidate’s full name (in the form in which they have asked for it to appear on the ballot form), contact details (email address is sufficient), and staff identity number;
may include a recent passport sized photograph of the candidate’s head or head and shoulders.
The nomination period will commence on Tuesday, 28 April 2026 and close at 2:00pm on Tuesday, 12 May 2026. Nominations will only be accepted during this time.
The Returning Officer will accept a signed, completed Nomination Form as a valid nomination that complies with the requirements set out above. The Nomination Form can be found here:Nomination form
Nomination forms can be lodged with the returning officer by emailing the completed forms to Secretariat@curtin.edu.au
If only one valid nomination is received, that candidate shall be elected;
If more than one valid nomination is received, an election will be conducted to fill the position;
The system of voting will be Optional Preferential;
The election will be conducted by Curtin’s electronic voting system Simply Voting; and
The candidate that receives the highest number of votes following the distribution of preferences will be declared elected to Council.
The key dates in relation to the election are as follows:
If an election is required, all academic staff members will be notified by email on Friday, 15 May 2026.
An electronic ballot form will be prepared and will incorporate the candidate statements and photographs (where provided).
An email will be sent from Simply Voting on Wednesday, 20 May 2026 to those eligible to vote with details on how to access the Simply Voting site.
Those eligible to vote will be able to use this link to vote from receipt on Wednesday, 20 May 2026 until the close of the voting period.
The voting period will end at 5:00 pm on Thursday, 4 June 2026. After this time it will no longer be possible to access the Simply Voting site to vote in this election.
Votes will be counted as soon as practicable after the voting period ends.
The result of the election will be declared by the Returning Officer on Monday, 8 June 2026.
