Scholarships Travel Process
All students in receipt of a scholarship (administered by the Curtin Scholarships Office) that contributes toward a travel experience, must comply with the applicable process below.
As part of the John Curtin Scholarship Program and Don Watts High Achiever Scholarship, recipients can access up to $6,000 towards an eligible international study experience where the scholar can immerse themselves in another culture and learn about their field of study in a global context.
This section outlines the process for recipients of these scholarships that must be followed to access the travel stipend. Scholars must complete their international experience prior to completing their degree at Curtin.

| 1 | Preparation | Explore global opportunities early and book a meeting with your Faculty Engagement team to discuss and select an international experience that aligns with their field of study. |
| 2 | Apply for International Experience | Complete steps to secure your spot. Contact the relevant Faculty Mobility or Go Global team for further assistance. |
| 3 | Apply for Travel Grant Funding | Apply for the John Curtin and Don Watts Scholars – Travel Grant (Travel Grant) to receive the payment. Ideally, apply at least 2-3 months prior to the departure. |
| 4 | Accept Travel Grant Terms and Conditions | Accept the Travel Grant terms and conditions within 2 weeks and ensure bank details are up to date in the Concur payment system. |
| 5 | Comply with Curtin’s Travel Requirements | Complete the Fieldwork Risk Assessment (FRA) and/or TOP (Travel Operations Portal) prior to the departure, as instructed by your Faculty Mobility team or Go Global team. For TOP, select “self-funded”. See Travel Support for more information. |
| 6 | Provide Approvals | Forward approval email(s) to Scholarships Office via email scholarships@curtin.edu.au. The travel stipend will be made directly to a scholar’s nominated bank account upon receipt of approval email(s). |
| 7 | Book Flights with the Curtin Travel Team | Your flights must be booked with the Curtin Travel Team. Further details and their contact information can be found on the Travel Support website. Once the flights have been booked, forward the confirmation of flight details to the Scholarships Office via email scholarships@curtin.edu.au. |
| 8 | Notify Leadership Team | Inform the Student Development Consultant (Leadership) that you will be undertaking international experience via leadership@curtin.edu.au |
| 9 | Complete Experience | Complete the event/activity/travel experience within 12 months of receiving the travel grant offer. |
| 10 | Submit Report | Submit your report within 14 days of completing the event/activity/travel experience to the Scholarships Office via email scholarships@curtin.edu.au.. |
FAQ’s
Apply approximately 2-3 months prior to the departure when you have all the activity details and can provide supporting documentation (e.g. a confirmation letter from your host university for an international exchange, all the quote details – airfare, accommodation, etc. for essential travel related costs). Please do not apply more than 6 months in advance.
Examples of international experience include exchange with partner universities, intercampus exchange with international Curtin campuses, Curtin sourced international practicum, study tour, rural placement or self-sourced opportunities (if the above options are not feasible).
Key Points:
- Must align with your current course of study and/or career ambitions
- Must receive credits, log-book hours or accreditation from overseas study OR the overseas study (or alternative program) must be endorsed by Curtin University – e.g. international exchange, study tour organised by Curtin University
- Must receive a letter of support from your course coordinator, school or faculty (for self-sourced activities/programs)
