What is the Chicago referencing style?

UPDATED 11 NOV 2025 | 5:42AM

The Chicago referencing style is a system or style used to acknowledge sources in academic writing. There are two versions of this style:

  • Notes and Bibliography - which uses a numerical system of footnotes for the in-text citations and provides a bibliography.
  • Author-Date - which uses the author and date for the in-text citations and provides a reference list.
Curtin Library supports the use of the Chicago Author-Date referencing style, and provides a guide with examples of how to reference materials according to this style.

For information and examples using the Footnote version, refer to The Chicago Manual of Style.
