Health and Safety Representatives (HSR’s)
HSR functions
- Representing workers health and safety interests in their area;
- monitoring measures taken by the person conducting the relevant business or undertaking or that person’s representative in compliance with the WHS Act;
- investigating health and safety complaints from workers in their area;
- inquiring into anything that appears to be a risk to the health or safety of workers in their area;
- inspecting the areas they represent;
- accompanying an inspector during an inspection of their area;
- with the consent of the worker, being present at meetings or interviews that relates to work health and safety between a worker and their manager or an inspector and a worker;
- requesting the establishment of a health and safety committee;
- receiving information concerning the work health and safety of workers in their area; excluding medical information;
- whenever necessary, request the assistance of any one;
- In some circumstances, direct a person to cease unsafe work or issue a PIN (only if they have completed the approved HSR training). PINs should only be issued after consultation with the person who the HSR believes is contravening a provision in the WHS legislation.
Resolution of issues
HSR’s facilitate the resolution of issues process which enables management and staff to work together to improve workplace health and safety. HSR’s therefore deal regularly with co-workers, workplace supervisors and senior management.
