FIFO Worker Health Research Priorities

The project

FIFO Worker Health Research Priorities is a co-design research project focused on understanding the health priorities and support needs of Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) workers who may be at increased risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and mental health challenges.

FIFO work involves unique pressures—including long rosters, disrupted sleep, time away from family, limited food and exercise options, and social isolation—that are rarely considered in existing health programs. This project brings FIFO workers together with researchers to first listen to and understand workers’ experiences, priorities, and support needs, before identifying practical, realistic health-focused solutions that fit FIFO work patterns.

The involvement opportunity

The research team are seeking FIFO workers to join a Community Advisory Group to share their lived experience, guide research priorities, and ensure future health programs are relevant, respectful, and feasible for FIFO workers and their families. They would like to meet with a small group of people aged between 30 and 65, to discuss what they think are the most important issues to address in mid-life, in order to prevent poorer health later in life.

This will be a one-off meeting held in February 2026, however there may be opportunities to continue to be involved in the project.
