If at first you don’t succeed…

Whether you’re looking for a part-time job, trying to land that competitive internship, or win your spot on a graduate program, the job search journey can be a challenging one.

Not every application you submit will be successful – even the most accomplished professionals have had to face rejection at some point in their careers. It’s important to acknowledge, learn and grow professionally from these experiences.

Review your applications

Unsuccessful applications can indicate that your documents or interview strategies may need to be fine-tuned. Ensure you target your application documents to not only align with the position criteria and requirements, but also to showcase your achievements and skills effectively. Remember to highlight how your values and goals fit with the company’s culture and future vision, showing a genuine interest in the role and enthusiasm for the organisation.

Seek constructive feedback

Reach out to recruiters and interviewers for constructive feedback on your applications or interviews. While it may feel a little intimidating, this feedback is invaluable for understanding where you can improve. Learn to embrace feedback with an open mind and use it as a guide to refine your job search strategy.

Look to upskill

Review job descriptions you’re interested in to identify what employers are looking for and then create a SMART career plan to help you upskill and acquire new knowledge. This plan could include taking an online course, earning a new certificate, or attending a professional development workshop to enhance your employability skills and make yourself more marketable.

Know your industry

Research current job market trends using Labour Market Insights to understand which industries and sectors are thriving and which are facing challenges. This knowledge can help you tailor your job search strategy to align with growth areas. Being open to adjusting your career goals or considering goals that might not have initially been on your radar can lead you to exciting opportunities you hadn’t considered before.

Develop meaningful connections

Put simply, networking is people helping people and, when we start thinking of it in this way, it is easier to see how it can be authentic and mutually beneficial. To help you gain insights into your chosen field, obtain insider knowledge and discover potential job leads, connect with industry professionals, Curtin Alumni or find a mentor. Our Skilled Professional Challenge includes a useful Start Networking module.

Have a support team

Share your job search experiences honestly and seek support and encouragement from your people. Your support team could include trusted family, friends and mentors who can help you stay motivated during the challenging times. They can offer valuable insights, help you stay focused, and provide emotional support.
