For the second time, students and alumni from Curtin’s School of Design and Art have attended Design and Art Direction’s (D&AD) New Blood Workshop for young creatives in Sydney after being selected through a competitive process.

Eight students and five alumni from Curtin’s School of Design and Art attended the D&AD New Blood “Brief to Broadcast” workshop in Sydney on 12 November, which showed how creative projects can go from concept to product within a single day.

This year’s workshop topic was “Make an Issue into a Big Deal”, encouraging participants to think about how an integrated, collaborative campaign based off their work could positively impact important issues. The intensive workshop included presentations from professionals in the field of design and exclusive one-on-one mentoring.

To win the chance to attend the workshop, the entrants were asked to make a 60-second video about an issue they were passionate about.

Curtin design and art students and alumni submitted their videos and secured almost half of the available 30 places.

“This is the second year running that our students have bested the eastern states institutions in the creative talent competition,” said Associate Professor Steve Mickler, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Humanities.

“The students will obtain credit in two different units for the video presentation, then the work and outcomes from the workshop will be displayed on the global D&AD website. Well done all!”

Nils Leonard, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of Grey London, a leading creative agency in the UK, hosted the workshop.

“We need to encourage a culture of creativity and D&AD is a fantastic platform for broadcasting this message. Young creatives are the future of this industry and helping to nurture them is essential,” said Mr Leonard.

The winning Curtin students were Roishin Byrne, Kate Davies, Joseph Dennis, Giuliana Drudi, Steph Gotch-Martin, Hayden Griffiths, Sam Hall and Charissa Martin, while the winning alumni were Alice Cogin, Maya Halilovic, Kat Neves, Skipper Van Peer and Marina Vailieva.

By showing creativity, passion and a real-world sensibility, we are excited to see the entrants demonstrate that they are leading game-changers in the field of design.
