A Student’s Guide to a Weekend In Perth

Hello! I’m Mikaela, and I’m a Perth student in my 4th year of study, studying a Bachelor of Arts (Screen Arts) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing). I’ve lived in Perth my whole life and will forever be a Perth defender. I love the city and think it is the perfect place to live, and over my university years have perfected my suggestions for the perfect weekend.

Friday:

For me the best way to start the weekend is by beginning on a Friday (because it makes the weekend feel like it was longer). Usually, I’ll try catch up with my friends for dinner at our go-to places like Albany highway in East Victoria Park, which has tons of options like Asian, Italian, Burgers and Pubs. Oxford Street, Beaufort Street and Fremantle are also some locations with heaps of choices for food, and when the nights are still warm Scarborough beach sunset markets can also be fun! Another favourite is Northbridge, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and cuisines to suit any craving, and with free weekday parking in the city after 6pm, it’s an easy central location to meet mates who are coming from all different directions.

Saturday:

Saturday morning for me is the best time to exercise, with some favourite places to walk being along the beach, around Optus stadium, the Perth Hills trails, or anywhere in Kings Park. There are other cool ways to get your morning exercise in too, with Eventbrite and Facebook events showcasing free community events like bike riding classes, skateboarding events, community bootcamp/ fitness classes, yoga, Park Runs, and surfing events. With run clubs and sunrise beach dips being the ‘it-thing’ now, the communities are massive and welcoming too!

After, I’ll either head home or to the library. If I have a group project, I make sure to book a library room. I’ll study for a couple of hours and make a study plan for the upcoming week. A really good way to revise is to upload notes and revision to sites like Quizlet and Kahoot, as a fun way to practice and challenge yourself.

On a Saturday afternoon, I love to hit up the op-shops, or second-hand thrift markets. I also love to check out the Perth Cultural Centre; with The Art Gallery of WA and the WA Museum Boola Bardip being easy and cheap outings, as the City of Perth Parking (CPP) spaces are free for 3 hours. Otherwise, I may have Curtin Volunteering! shifts on, with some programs running partly on the weekend.

Sunday:

On a Sunday morning (if I have saved enough money during the week), I’d head out to a late morning brunch. Perth’s brunch scene is awesome, and there are heaps of writers and bloggers who make lists about the best places to test out. Personally, my go-to brunch order is an Egg’s Benny, and I am still on the hunt to find the perfect hollandaise.

Sundays are my errand day, so I’ll do the usual cleaning, washing, planning, week-prepping and everything in between. Remember to block out time for your chores; taking care of yourself and your spaces can be tiring and sometimes hard to do, but having a clear space is the start to having a clear mind and is a great way to gather some clarity and feel ready to take on Monday.

Sunday nights are chill nights, and usually end with home-made dinner and watching whatever Netflix show I’m currently obsessing over.

Reminder:

Most importantly, every weekend is different and flexible. Some weekends I’m exhausted, and just want to chill at home and recharge my social, emotional and study battery. Other times, I may have just completed an assignment and feel like I deserve a break and to celebrate.

It is all dependant and flexible on your mental and physical health, uni workload, your friends and their commitments and your need to rest, so each weekend may look different and that is totally okay!

Hope you enjoy your weekend!
