Dear students,

We wish to thank those who have reached out to us with their concerns during this deeply distressing time for the Curtin community. We value your input and thoughts.

In particular, we are aware that concerns have been raised about the removal by Curtin of video content from the web, which featured the deceased discussing his work. Please know that this decision was made to protect his identity and to prevent potential misuse by others, including media outlets. This action is taken during significant incidents to protect the individual and their families. There was no intention to diminish the contributions he made to the University, as a dedicated student, a valued staff member and a friend to many. We are sorry if there was any perception that suggested otherwise. These decisions, as with all others at such times, are made after careful consideration by the Incident team.

We are also aware that disturbing content related to the tragedy is being circulated across various online platforms and we have lodged formal requests for its removal. We strongly encourage you not to click on these links or share such content to safeguard your own, and others, mental health and wellbeing.

For those in need of support, confidential, in-person assistance is available today on the Bentley campus in Building 216.402. This service will continue for the coming weeks and throughout the exam period.

For help this weekend (Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October) please call 1800 808 374 and quote the number 563 373 to receive dedicated counselling support.

In addition, other support services are available, including:

The Student Guild website also contains resources relating to support. Please remember that if you feel unsafe at any time reach out to the Safer Community Team 24/7 on (08) 9266 4444 or using the SafeZone app.

As previously advised, flexibility around assessments may also be available for those students who are affected. Please contact your Unit Coordinator to discuss.

You may be aware that tributes have been laid by staff and students in the Engineering Pavilion. The ground floor space has been designated a “Quiet Area” and we kindly ask that you remain considerate of others as they reflect and grieve. We are in ongoing discussions with family members, staff and students to understand the best way to bring the Curtin community together and provide an opportunity to pay our respects. We will provide details as soon as plans have been confirmed.

In the meantime, please reach out for support if you need it and take care,

Professor Paul Brunton
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic
