Over 600 Curtin volunteers will assist with 42 community service projects across Western Australia, Malaysia and Singapore this September, as part of John Curtin Weekend.

The six-week long initiative, now in its 17th year, is organised by Curtin Volunteers! and is one of WA’s largest annual community projects.

John Curtin Weekend coordinator, Ms Maureen Meredith, said she was delighted John Curtin Weekend will be expanding to Singapore this year, with the help of Curtin Miri students and volunteers from the Singapore campus.

“It is a great opportunity for our Singapore students and volunteers to be involved in John Curtin Weekend this year and assist with community projects on an international level,” Ms Meredith said.

“Curtin staff and students in Australia and overseas will visit regional sites of their choice over the six weekends in September and October to work on their selected community projects.

“The local communities always welcome the volunteers with open arms and provide great hospitality, which shows why John Curtin Weekend has been such a success over the last 17 years.”

Professor Jill Downie, Curtin’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, said she was pleased Singapore students would be involved in this year’s John Curtin Weekend.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for Curtin staff and students to represent the University on an international scale and for the Singapore campus to be involved, along with Curtin Sarawak,” Professor Downie said.

John Curtin Weekend is held to honour Australia’s wartime Prime Minister, John Curtin, and also ties in with the John Curtin Medal which is awarded to members of the community who demonstrate his qualities of vision, leadership and community service.

Curtin Volunteers! is a not-for-profit, student-run organisation which has been part of Curtin University for 22 years.
