Cyber Security Alert: Malicious Netflix Emails

What is happening?

Spam emails are being sent to personal and Curtin email accounts by cyber criminals in an attempt to steal your Facebook login details.
These spam messages are using the lure of a free Netflix subscription.

What does it look like?

You may receive an email as described above. The email will offer you a free Netflix subscription and ask you to claim the subscription by logging into your Facebook account.
The website you are directed to is a fake Facebook website, designed to steal your Facebook login details.

What does it do?

If you submit your Facebook login details on the fake Facebook site, the website will steal the information and allow cyber criminals to post content using your Facebook account to attract other victims. They may also use your Facebook information to send targeted emails to you later with the intention of accessing your work data and systems, your bank accounts and other high value targets. Furthermore, if you use the same email address and password for other services, the cyber criminals may gain access to these services too.

How do I make sure I don’t fall for this scam?

If you receive a suspicious email in your inbox, claiming to be from Netflix and offering a free subscription, please send the email as an attachment to spam@curtin.edu.au.
If you receive this email in your personal inbox, please delete the email.

Further information

If you believe you have been targeted, please contact IT Support for advice on +61 8 9266 9000 (ext #9000) or email service.desk@curtin.edu.au.

To help protect Curtin from being exposed to these attacks, Digital & Technology Solutions strongly recommends the following for all students:

  • Always be wary of “free” gifts and offers, especially ones that are too good to be true.
  • Always use a different username and password for separate services, and avoid using your Curtin email address for personal access (such as banking and Facebook).
  • Read Curtin’s cyber security FAQs on email scam awareness & protecting yourself at home.
