Five Curtin University students have been selected to represent Australia at the 2025 World University Games, set to take place from 16–27 July in Germany. This prestigious international event brings together the world’s top university athletes, and Curtin is proud to see its students competing on the global stage.
Representing Australia will be:
Mia Gordon – Javelin, Track and Field
Jacqueline Budiarto – Table Tennis
Sidney Win Shwe – Table Tennis
Esteban Hoarau – Fencing
Jed Walker – Beach Volleyball
We caught up with a few of the athletes, who shared their thoughts on being selected.

Mia Gordon
Mia Gordon, 22, is a Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Property Development. She is the WA State Under-20 record holder in javelin and ranks ninth all-time in Australia for the event.
“I’m extremely grateful to have made this team,” she said. “It’s been my goal this season, and for it to come true is just so exciting. It’s been a crazy, busy year and I can’t wait to get over to Europe and compete.”

Sidney Win Shwe
Sidney Win Shwe, 18, is in his third year of a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Finance. He is the Australian National Champion in both U19 Teams and Junior Doubles. Along with his fellow student athletes, Sidney is a member of Curtin’s Elite Athlete Program, which supports student-athletes in balancing academic and sporting commitments.
“Being an elite student-athlete is all about discipline and time management,” he said. “Balancing intense training for the National Championships and World University Games in Germany with university assessments isn’t easy, but it teaches you resilience, focus, and how to thrive under pressure.”

Jacqueline Budiarto
Jacqueline Budiarto, 21, is studying Exercise and Sports Science. She has represented Western Australia at numerous national championships, winning multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals, and has held rankings as high as No. 1 in Junior Girls and No. 2 in Women’s Table Tennis in WA.
“This is a dream come true and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete on the world stage against top athletes while proudly showcasing my dedication and love for the sport.”
Curtin University congratulates all five athletes on their remarkable achievement and wishes them the very best as they prepare to represent Australia in Germany. Good luck and go Curtin!
