Writer to advocate for most vulnerable

06/02/2024. By Carmelle Wilkinson.

Curtin graduate Amer Saleh

Amer Saleh.

Born to a Syrian mother and Palestine father, Amer Saleh is all too familiar with the conflict, and trauma that comes from severe political differences.

Days from graduating with a Master of Arts in professional and publishing writing, the 24-year-old reflects on her parentsโ€™ brave decision to flee Syria for London when she was just two, and her personal journey as the child of immigrant parents.

โ€œMy parents really are my refuge,โ€ she said.

โ€œTheir resilience, strength and faith have made me who I am today, and their love and unwavering support gave me the courage to leave the UK four years ago and chase my dream of becoming a writer.โ€

Watching the carnage unfold in Gaza and Israel, Amer is reminded why her desire to fight for human rights and freedom of speech is so important.

โ€œGiving the worldโ€™s most vulnerable a voice and writing about things that matter the most to me, is what I want to do when I leave Curtin,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œI would love to make a difference and work for an organisation that advocates for something bigger than me.โ€

Growing up, Amer said she would often have conversations with her dad about Palestineโ€™s past and his response was always the same.

โ€œIโ€™d call dad crying saying and heโ€™d say itโ€™s ok, the Palestinians are tough. They will get through this. They have faith,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œI think when youโ€™ve gone through so much as my dad has, you build a thick skin to it. Heโ€™s made room in his heart for it.โ€

Leaving behind their family, friends and established careers, Amer credits her parentโ€™s bravery for wanting a better life for her and her younger brother.

Curtin graduate Amer Saleh with her family

Amer with her parents and younger brother in the UK.

โ€œMy parents are smart. Mum has a degree in computer science and dad a degree in business, which must have made it even harder to pack up and leave,โ€ she said.

โ€œWhen they relocated to the UK, they left everything behind and had to start all over again.

โ€œMy father left behind a good job where he was a respected boss and started working two jobs to provide for us.

โ€œHe would work at a laundromat during the day and then would drive to his evening job where he was a waiter. He was up early hours in the morning and came back in the early hours of the following day.

โ€œHe had Sundays off though and would take my brother and I into town, which I loved. It was my favourite day of the week.โ€

Amer said it was her fatherโ€™s incredible work ethic that she most admired.

โ€œHe never had a sick day, he never once slept in and he taught me itโ€™s OK to start from scratch,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œSpending the next couple years in London proving to everyone who he was and reminding himself of who he used to be, Iโ€™m sure wasnโ€™t easy.

โ€œBut despite this my father never let me feel like there wasnโ€™t anything I couldnโ€™t have, and he still spoiled me. He made it look so easy.โ€

Amer said her mum on the other hand was the brains of the home.

Amer with her mother.

โ€œMum knew the answer to everything. While that quickly became annoying, she never got tired of saying โ€˜I told you soโ€™,โ€™โ€™ she laughed.

โ€œMy mum is the epitome of wisdom. It was like she had lived many lives before. I suppose she had.

โ€œThere was never a topic I couldnโ€™t go to her for. Maths, fashion, friends. No one knew how to solve algebra better than she did. She also taught me how to be self-sufficient, self-soothing and selfish.โ€

A few years ago, Amer said she came very close to losing her mum after open heart surgery complications.

โ€œMy mother is the strongest person I know. Iโ€™m not sure angels are meant to roam through the trenches down here with the rest of us. But itโ€™s a miracle to know her, and a privilege to have her as my mum,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œDespite everything sheโ€™s been through, losing her home, her father, surviving cervical cancer and enduring two open-heart surgeries, she continues to stand up for herself and always reminds me I am deserving of a home, a country and a future.โ€

Amer said it was her familyโ€™s roots, bloodline and battle scars that has moulded her into the person she is today.

โ€œIโ€™m proud to be the daughter of immigrants,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œIn the midst of burning flames so to speak, my parents walked out unscathed, undefeated and most importantly, undivided.โ€

Amer said stepping out of her comfort zone and moving to Australia on her own, gave her a glimpse of what it must have felt like for her parents to move to a new country and start a new life.

โ€œWhile the first few months was a struggle, looking back, the experience definitely gave me confidence and made me believe I could do and be anything,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œWhen I leave Curtin and find my place in the world, I can only hope I will do it with the same amount of perseverance and integrity as my parents.โ€

Meet Curtin Electrical and Electronics Engineering graduate Haniff Soorian Pagavalan who is pursuing his dream as an Electrical Engineer at Western Power. โšก๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

Haniff was involved in Curtinโ€™s Internship Gateway Program, which gives organisations the chance to foster connections with highly motivated science and engineering students.

Through the program, your organisation will not only contribute to shaping the development of our industry-ready graduates but will also provide your team with the opportunity to develop their mentoring and leadership skills.

For Haniff, undertaking the internship was an invaluable experience that prepared him for the workforce. ๐ŸŽ“

โ€œI spent about three months as an intern and for the first month, they sent me into the workshop. I got to see how the switchboards were constructed.

In that experience, Iโ€™d say the most valuable thing was seeing how the drawings translated into the real physical thing. Seeing it in real life makes a lot of a difference and I learned that Iโ€™m more capable than I think I am,โ€ Haniff said.

Eric Carwardine has a special connection with Curtin University that spans 35 glorious years, from 1964 to 1999. ๐ŸŽ“

Last month, the Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences alumnus and former Curtin staff member took a trip down memory lane with us, visiting his old stomping grounds at our Bentley Campus.

โ€œIn the summer of 1964, I was part of the pioneering movement from St George's Terrace Perth to the Bentley campus.

โ€œSomewhere in my archives, I have photographic negatives of the construction of Building 306 which housed the departments of Chemistry, Biology, and Medical Technology, and was set amongst a pine plantation. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿงช

โ€œIn the basement of Building 306, there was a cafeteria and an ablutions block and several of us set up home in the ground floor chemistry laboratories, putting our sleeping bags under the fume hoods. With all the comforts of home, we could save traveling time as we set up the laboratories.โ€

Eric attended Perth Technical College before it became the Western Australian Institute of Technology in 1967, and later Curtin in 1985.

Eric now resides at SwanCare Tandara in East Victoria Park with his wife Heather and likes to keep active by creating beautiful jarrah furniture and writing his memoir.โœ ๐Ÿ““

โ€œAt the age of eighty years my quota of one billion heartbeats must be nearing exhaustion but before the counter reached zero, I had a task to perform, a pilgrimage to where my full-time employment started,โ€ he said.

โ€œWhen I retired in 1999, I was the longest-serving member of the technical staff. Thank you, Curtin, for the opportunity to stroll down memory lane.โ€ ๐Ÿ’›

โ€œI remember reading The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe for the first time when I was 11 years old, and not being able to put it down. Itโ€™s a magical memory and one that can easily be summoned every time I attempt to clean my wardrobe.
