WA pharmacist hailed health hero

01/02/2024. By Carmelle Wilkinson.

Perth Children’s Hospital senior pharmacist Allan Jones.

Hailed a hero at the WA Health Excellence Awards, 81-year-old Perth pharmacist Allan Jones is the first to bashfully deny the prestigious title.

“Oh, I’m not a hero,’’ he laughs.

“I don’t think of myself as a hero, I’m just doing my job.

“The real heroes are the parents and carers who come into the hospital’s pharmacy and get medication for their sick child.

“Despite the challenges they face, their ability to laugh and smile and just be nice to others during what is understandably a difficult time just blows me away. They are the true heroes.”

A warm and familiar face to all those who present at the pharmacy counter, Allan has been dispensing medication for Perth’s most vulnerable and ill children at Perth Children’s Hospital (formerly Princess Margaret Hospital) for 47 years.

With no signs of slowing down or retiring just yet, the senior pharmacist was recognised for his 55 years of service to the WA health industry at the WA Health Excellence Awards late last year.

Nominated by parents, colleagues, and patients for the positive impact he’s had in the lives of many WA children and their families, Allan said one of the reasons why he’s stayed in the job for all these years was the immense warmth and acceptance shown from all those who walk through his pharmacy doors.

Allan (pictured here with 7 News presenter Susannah Carr) was acknowledged for his outstanding contribution to the WA health industry.

“I’ve known some of these families for many years and have seen their children grow from babies to young teens,’’ he said.

“A lot of our patients are children with chronic illnesses, who have been coming to get medication since the day they were born. I’ve watched them grow up and have followed their progress over the years.”

Allan pictured with some PCH families who nominated him for the WA Health Hero Award.

Looking back over his 55-year career, Allan recalls a conversation his parents had with a neighbour for sparking his interest in pharmacy.

“When I was growing up, our neighbour was a pharmacist, and he owned a community pharmacy in Applecross. I remember one day my parents were telling him I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study when I left school and he suggested pharmacy,’’ he said.

“Soon after, I started my pharmacy degree at Perth Technical College. This was in the 1960s before it changed to the Western Australia Institute of Technology (WAIT).

“Now known as Curtin, the campus has changed a great deal since the days I used to roam. For a start, back when it was WAIT, there was only two schools, pharmacy and business.

“I’d have to walk through thick bushland and dirt tracks to get to my classes.”

Allan said a recent visit to campus with one his grandsons (who is currently studying at Curtin) brought back fond memories.

“My class was actually the first class to attend a lecture at WAIT,’’ he said.

“In my cohort there were about 25 males and just five females.

“Oh, I enjoyed my time at Curtin. I loved the camaraderie between my peers, and I had some fantastic lecturers.”

Following graduation, Allan said he worked at a pharmacy in Northbridge and then Piccadilly Arcade in the CBD before landing his dream job as senior pharmacist at Princess Margaret Hospital.

“While I enjoyed the work in those first few years, I started to get tired of the retail rat race so to speak,’’ he said.

“At Piccadilly pharmacy in particular there weren’t any medical surgeries around, so I didn’t get a chance to dispense medication.

“The most prescriptions I received were for the contraceptive pill.

“Come lunch time, the pharmacy was buzzing with office ladies buying their make-up and shampoo.”

Allan said it was while carrying out relief work at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital after leaving Piccadilly Pharmacy, that he noticed an advertisement for a job at Princess Margaret Hospital.

“I called the chief pharmacist to express my interest, and he told me to come in the next day for a chat on my lunch break,’’ he said.

“Following our talk, he simply asked when could I start? Back then there was no formal interview panels you see.

“I’ve seen so much change in the industry over the years, the main being obviously changes in medication such as the increased sophistication of drugs and treatment using antibodies.”

Allan said while he still worked Monday to Friday full time, the days of working weekends and being on call from 6pm-8am were now behind him.

Allan has worked at Perth Children’s Hospital (formally Princess Margaret) for 47 years and has no intentions of retiring just yet.

“About 10 years ago I decided to slow down, if you call it that,’’ he laughed.

“Now I reserve my weekends for family, friends and reading.

“I still very much enjoy working and I don’t have any plans of retirement just yet.

“I haven’t got to that stage where I wake up and think, oh my gosh I have to go to work.”

As for anyone wanting to follow a career in pharmacy, Allan has some words of encouragement.

“Do it. You won’t regret it. I haven’t,’’ he said.

We caught up with Allan to discover his secret to a long and fulfilling career, all is revealed below.

If there is one thing volunteering has taught Curtin Nursing graduate Monika Kataragadda, it’s how to be brave. 🎓🤝

Monika’s love for volunteering sparked at Curtin, being involved in CurtinVolunteers! on campus gave her a sense of purpose, lifelong friendships, and memories.

In celebration of National Volunteers Week, Monika shares her volunteering experiences below.

𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬?
A: The Nowanup Trip I went on in 2023, as part of the John Curtin Weekend, stood out for me. Located just north-east of Albany, Nowanup Boodja is a centerpiece in the Gondwana Link ecological restoration program between the Stirling Ranges and the Fitzgerald River National Park.

On the trip, we were able to help with restoration work which included removing hazards from walking trails and putting up new fences to protect the native vegetation from non-Indigenous species. At the end of each day, we would sit around the campfire sharing our stories and struggles - it was great to be in the moment surrounded by nature with likeminded people.

𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟?
A: Personally, volunteering taught me to be more brave. On these trips, you often don’t know anyone and this forces you to form new connections in an environment you’re often not familiar with. I’m someone who likes to plan but I’ve come to realise people aren’t predictable and volunteering has helped me come to terms with the spontaneity of life, which has helped me in my career.

𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫?
A: If you have limited time, I suggest starting small. Sometimes the smallest projects can make the biggest impacts. Also, see if your workplace offers company volunteering that you can get involved in. Just do what interests you and give it a go!

Meet Curtin Electrical and Electronics Engineering graduate Haniff Soorian Pagavalan who is pursuing his dream as an Electrical Engineer at Western Power. ⚡🛠️

Haniff was involved in Curtin’s Internship Gateway Program, which gives organisations the chance to foster connections with highly motivated science and engineering students.

Through the program, your organisation will not only contribute to shaping the development of our industry-ready graduates but will also provide your team with the opportunity to develop their mentoring and leadership skills.

For Haniff, undertaking the internship was an invaluable experience that prepared him for the workforce. 🎓

“I spent about three months as an intern and for the first month, they sent me into the workshop. I got to see how the switchboards were constructed.

In that experience, I’d say the most valuable thing was seeing how the drawings translated into the real physical thing. Seeing it in real life makes a lot of a difference and I learned that I’m more capable than I think I am,” Haniff said.

Eric Carwardine has a special connection with Curtin University that spans 35 glorious years, from 1964 to 1999. 🎓

Last month, the Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences alumnus and former Curtin staff member took a trip down memory lane with us, visiting his old stomping grounds at our Bentley Campus.

“In the summer of 1964, I was part of the pioneering movement from St George's Terrace Perth to the Bentley campus.

“Somewhere in my archives, I have photographic negatives of the construction of Building 306 which housed the departments of Chemistry, Biology, and Medical Technology, and was set amongst a pine plantation. 🔬🧪

“In the basement of Building 306, there was a cafeteria and an ablutions block and several of us set up home in the ground floor chemistry laboratories, putting our sleeping bags under the fume hoods. With all the comforts of home, we could save traveling time as we set up the laboratories.”

Eric attended Perth Technical College before it became the Western Australian Institute of Technology in 1967, and later Curtin in 1985.

Eric now resides at SwanCare Tandara in East Victoria Park with his wife Heather and likes to keep active by creating beautiful jarrah furniture and writing his memoir.✍ 📓

“At the age of eighty years my quota of one billion heartbeats must be nearing exhaustion but before the counter reached zero, I had a task to perform, a pilgrimage to where my full-time employment started,” he said.

“When I retired in 1999, I was the longest-serving member of the technical staff. Thank you, Curtin, for the opportunity to stroll down memory lane.” 💛

Today is World Book Day! 📚🌏

To celebrate this special day, our Senior Writer and Editor-in-Chief of Curtin Commons Carmelle Wilkinson shares the book that ignited her love of literature.

“I remember reading The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe for the first time when I was 11 years old, and not being able to put it down. It’s a magical memory and one that can easily be summoned every time I attempt to clean my wardrobe.

If only there was a secret door behind my closest that opened to the wintery wonderland of Narnia…and the piles of clothing and chores would disappear – even for just a moment.

Now, having read it to both my kids, I can honestly say it’s still up there as one of my favourites.

An enchanted world where a lion can talk, an evil witch reigns, and magic and adventure lurk around every corner – what’s not to like?“
