Course structure
In this course, you’ll develop both knowledge and hands-on skills as you study biological sciences, mental health and nursing practice. The advanced aspects of your studies focus on building your leadership skills, expanding your knowledge of mental health and exploring how planetary health shapes human wellbeing.
- Leadership: Leadership development is a cornerstone of this program, helping you build the essential skills that distinguish exceptional healthcare professionals.
- Mental health: Mental health is woven throughout this course, with five specialised units designed to develop your understanding and integrate mental health principles into holistic nursing practice.
- Sustainability and planetary health: Themes of sustainability and planetary health are integrated through the course. In your third year, you’ll study a Planetary Health for Nursing unit to discover the connections between our natural environment and population health.
Through simulated practice and immersive fieldwork, you'll gain hands-on experience across diverse healthcare environments. This includes 840 hours of clinical placements in hospitals, private practices, aged care facilities, rural health settings and mental health services.¹ You may be eligible for a weekly payment during your placement through the Commonwealth Prac Payment initiative.
As collaboration is key to delivering care, you’ll be encouraged to work with interprofessional healthcare teams, studying alongside medical and allied health specialists from different fields.
This can be a physically and mentally challenging course. Please familiarise yourself with the inherent requirements before applying.
¹ A break from study of more than one semester may incur additional clinical practice.

Alternative streams
If you are currently a qualified enrolled or registered nurse, we provide two options to enhance your qualification.
Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse stream (domestic only)
This stream is tailored towards applicants who are registered as an AQF Diploma level 5 Enrolled Nurse and would like to become a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
You will build on your knowledge of the biological, behavioural and nursing sciences, and study the relationship between individuals, their families and communities, to deliver appropriate patient-centred care.
Your learning will involve interprofessional education, allowing you to study with different nursing and medical specialists from a range of fields.
Registered Nurse Conversion – Australian Registration Nurse stream (domestic and international)
This stream prepares registered nurses without current registration in Australia for registration. Internationally qualified registered nurses may seek registration within Australia after successfully completing this program.
The stream builds on your professional knowledge and experience as a registered nurse and enhances your capability as a member of an interprofessional team in a changing healthcare system.
These streams can be studied via our Bachelor of Science (Advanced Nursing) course from 2027. Before 2027, both streams can be studied via our Bachelor of Science (Nursing).
