This dynamic course prepares you to become a skilled leader in nursing.

In this course, biological, psychological and nursing sciences will inform your knowledge and skill development. The innovative and expansive Advanced Nursing curriculum features exciting opportunities to explore mental health, sustainability and planetary health, and leadership in nursing.

  • Leadership: Leadership development is a cornerstone of this program, helping you build the essential skills that distinguish exceptional healthcare professionals.
  • Mental health: Mental health is woven throughout this course, with five specialised units designed to develop your understanding and integrate mental health principles into holistic nursing practice.
  • Sustainability and planetary health: Themes of sustainability and planetary health are integrated through the course. In your third year, you’ll study a Planetary Health for Nursing unit to discover the connections between our natural environment and population health.

During simulated practice and immersive fieldwork, you'll gain practical expertise in diverse healthcare environments. This includes 840 hours of clinical placements across hospitals, private practices, aged care facilities, rural health settings and mental health services.¹

You'll also be encouraged to engage with interprofessional healthcare teams, studying alongside nursing, medical and allied health specialists from different fields.

As a graduate of this course, you’ll have a robust skillset that allows you to deliver exceptional person-centred and evidence-based care.

This can be a physically and mentally challenging course. Please familiarise yourself with the inherent requirements before applying.

You have left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.

How we define ‘experience’

‘Experience’ includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience. Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.

       ** Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream and Registered Nurse Conversion Australian Registration Stream will commence in 2027 in the Bachelor of Science (Advanced Nursing) (B-ADVNURS).

Students who have not successfully completed theory units must do so within a period of two semesters in order to complete the course requirements. A break of more than one semester will incur additional professional experience placement hours. Manual handling competency is a requirement for the course. Students are required to complete 840 hours of clinical placement over the duration of the course. On completion of this course, you will be eligible to apply for registration to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and will also need to meet the national registration standards. These include (but are not limited to): assessment of your initial nursing qualification and registration; Criminal History Screening; English Language Proficiency; assessment of any health, conduct or performance issues. For more information on the registration process or standards, please refer to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia: http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au.

Applicants should be aware that nursing can be a demanding course, with a number of Inherent Requirements for students. Applicants are expected to have read the Inherent Requirements and self-assessed their suitability and capacity to complete the course.

* The Comprehensive Stream is available for school leavers and mature age students; * The Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream is available to individuals who hold an Australian recognised Diploma in Enrolled Nursing and who are currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2). Those applying for the Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream are required to meet the Curtin University standard entry requirements. You cannot apply to this stream directly. Applications can be submitted via the main course page. * The Registered Nurse Conversion Australian Registration Stream is available to:

        Registered nurses whose Australian registration has lapsed due to a lack of currency of practice (must have practised within the last 10 years)

        Registered general nurses from overseas wishing to gain registration in Australia, (must hold qualifications that have been recognised via the Australian Qualifications Framework as equivalent to a diploma in nursing, meet Curtin English and entry requirements and have a minimum of 3 months full time recent clinical nursing experience as a Registered General Nurse in an acute health care setting.

        Mandatory requirements for professional experience placements (PEP) include but not limited to health and legal screening. Screening costs are the responsibility of the student and it is expected that the student will maintain currency of these for the duration of the course.

        More information related to health and legal screening can be located on the Health Sciences’ website. Students must be available for block weeks and rotational shifts during/outside the semester in healthcare facilities. While on PEP students require a Personal Electronic Device with mobile data to complete the assessment tool.

        In addition to satisfying Curtin University minimum English standard requirements for nursing courses, all applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency as specified in the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's (NMBA) English language skills registration standard. https://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx Refer to English language requirements for Nursing courses for detailed information on how to meet English proficiency for this course.

       You must complete the declaration form for English primary language competency.
