This exciting course prepares you to become a skilled and confident leader in nursing.

You’ll develop both knowledge and hands-on skills as you study biological, psychological and nursing sciences. The innovative and expansive Advanced Nursing curriculum features exciting opportunities to explore mental health, sustainability and planetary health, and leadership in nursing.

  • Leadership: Leadership development is a cornerstone of this program, helping you build the essential skills that distinguish exceptional healthcare professionals.
  • Mental health: Mental health is woven throughout this course, with five specialised units designed to develop your understanding and integrate mental health principles into holistic nursing practice.
  • Sustainability and planetary health: Themes of sustainability and planetary health are integrated through the course. In your third year, you’ll study a Planetary Health for Nursing unit to discover the connections between our natural environment and population health.

Through simulated practice and immersive fieldwork, you'll gain hands-on experience across diverse healthcare environments. This includes 840 hours of clinical placements in hospitals, private practices, aged care facilities, rural health settings and mental health services.¹

You'll also be encouraged to collaborate with interprofessional healthcare teams, studying alongside nursing, medical and allied health specialists from different fields.

You’ll graduate with the skills and experience to deliver person-centred, evidence-based care.

Applicants with higher education are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, such as a university degree. This may include applicants who are currently studying a higher education course at another education provider and want to transfer to Curtin University, or applicants who are currently studying at Curtin but want to switch to a different course. It may also include applicants who have completed past study with university and non-university higher education providers.

Curtin course switcher criteria

To switch into this course from Extended Term 1A, you need to have completed at least 100 credits, with a course weighted average (CWA) of 65% or higher, with an academic status of Good Standing; and met the admission criteria for minimum entry.

To switch into this course in Extended Delivery Period 2A, you need to have completed at least 100 credits, with a course weighted average (CWA) of 60% or higher, with an academic status of Good Standing; and met the admission criteria for minimum entry. Students in the UniReady enabling program must complete the program with a course weighted average (CWA) of 60% and a grade of 70% or higher in BIOL0001 Introduction to Health Sciences unit.

Course switching is not available for the following Nursing streams: * Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream * Registered Nurse Conversion - Australian Registration Nurse Stream.

Higher education course switcher criteria

To switch into this course from another higher education course, you need to have completed at least 100 credits, with a course weighted average (CWA) of 65% or higher, with an academic status of Good Standing; and met the admission criteria for minimum entry.

Course switching is not available for the following Nursing streams: * Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream * Registered Nurse Conversion - Australian Registration Nurse Stream. Manual Handling and Basic Life Support Certification is required prior to commencement of the course and then updated on a yearly basis. You will need to keep these requirements current during your course.

You are responsible for the cost of these. You must be available to undertake clinical practice during and/or outside semester in health care facilities. You must also be available to work rotational shift work, including morning, afternoon and nightshift.

A break from study of more than one semester may incur additional clinical practice. Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream and Registered Nurse Conversion Australian Registration Stream will commence in 2027 in the Bachelor of Science (Advanced Nursing) (B-ADVNURS).

This course is pending accredited by Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and pending approval as an approved program of study by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

This course will undergo assessment for accreditation by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council in 2025. Graduates can apply for registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Students who have not successfully completed theory units must do so within a period of two semesters in order to complete the course requirements. A break of more than one semester will incur additional professional experience placement hours. Manual handling competency is a requirement for the course. Students are required to complete 840 hours of clinical placement over the duration of the course. On completion of this course, you will be eligible to apply for registration to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and will also need to meet the national registration standards. These include (but are not limited to): assessment of your initial nursing qualification and registration; Criminal History Screening; English Language Proficiency; assessment of any health, conduct or performance issues.

Applicants should be aware that nursing can be a demanding course, with a number of Inherent Requirements for students. Applicants are expected to have read the Inherent Requirements and self-assessed their suitability and capacity to complete the course.

The Comprehensive Stream is available for school leavers and mature age students; The Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream is available to individuals who hold an Australian recognised Diploma in Enrolled Nursing and who are currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2).

Those applying for the Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream are required to meet the Curtin University standard entry requirements. You cannot apply to this stream directly.

Applications can be submitted via the main course page. The Registered Nurse Conversion Australian Registration Stream is available to:

  Registered nurses whose Australian registration has lapsed due to a lack of currency of practice (must have practised within the last 10 years)

• Registered general nurses from overseas wishing to gain registration in Australia, (must hold qualifications that have been recognised via the Australian Qualifications Framework as equivalent to a diploma in nursing, meet Curtin English and entry requirements and have a minimum of 3 months full time recent clinical nursing experience as a Registered General Nurse in an acute health care setting.

• Mandatory requirements for professional experience placements (PEP) include but not limited to health and legal screening. Screening costs are the responsibility of the student and it is expected that the student will maintain currency of these for the duration of the course.

• More information related to health and legal screening can be located on the Health Sciences’ website. Students must be available for block weeks and rotational shifts during/outside the semester in healthcare facilities. While on PEP students require a Personal Electronic Device with mobile data to complete the assessment tool.

• In addition to satisfying Curtin University minimum English standard requirements for nursing courses, all applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency as specified in the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's (NMBA) English language skills registration standards.
