A team of accounting and finance students from Beijing National Accounting Institute in China has won the top prize at the inaugural Curtin Cup Competition, held at Curtin University.

The inaugural competition, which was hosted by Curtin’s School of Accounting and the Global Chinese Accounting Association (GCAA), brought together the best accounting and finance students from four international Chinese universities who were tasked with developing and presenting a topical business case relevant to the accounting profession.

Professor Saurav Dutta, the Head of the School of Accounting at Curtin University, congratulated all the students who participated in the inaugural competition.

“The competition required each student team to build a business case study focusing on a cultural or topical business issue and then present this to a team of judges, comprising of academics, industry representatives and accounting professionals,” Professor Dutta said.

“All teams were then marked on the relevance, content and quality of the case, as well as their decision making and problem solving skills. All shortlisted teams were then given the same business case study, which they were required to present on the very next day.”

Professor Dutta said the inaugural competition was a great success, adding it offered a fantastic opportunity to promote WA as an attractive study destination for international students.

“Along with competing in the competition, the teams of students also spent time exploring all that Perth has to offer, including tours to the Perth Mint, Kings Park, the Swan Valley and Caversham Wildlife Park,” Professor Dutta said.

“The success of the competition would not have been possible without the teams of students and the academics who committed their time to travelling to WA to compete. I would like to formally congratulate the winning team from Beijing National Accounting Institute for taking out the top prize.”

A team of students from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law received second place, while teams from Harbin University of Commerce and Business College of Beijing Union University received third and fourth place in the competition.

The competition was hosted over a three-day period from July 17 to 19 at Curtin University’s Perth Campus in Western Australia.
