Amy’s gnome bound

Garden gnomes and rock ‘n roll may seem an unlikely combination, but for Curtin student Amy Hetherington the Gnome bound Music Festival seemed an obvious idea for a music video.

Amy, a second year Journalism/Film TV student, stumbled across Gnomesville outside of Dardanup in the state’s South-West.

‘It’s just a bizarre place – filled with thousands of gnomes – and I thought, “We should totally film a music video here,”‘ she said.

As luck would have it, she did just that – producing a gnome themed clip for her Music Videos and Advertising unit. The assessment was a group project, with the rest of the crew made up of Amy’s fellow students.

‘I was the only second year student, the rest of the production team were all in third year, so I was really lucky to have some really experienced and really talented people behind me ‘.

‘And being a class group production, everyone wants to get a good result, and I think everyone came together really well,’ she said.

Set in a forest, the video highlights local band Sounds Like Bears’ single Between Lines. Amy’s pleased the group did a good job for the band, which features her friend and fellow Curtin Student Ambassador Liam Pollock on lead guitar.

‘We tried to get into the band’s head so it was as if they were just playing at a regular festival and they’d forget they were playing to a camera and a bunch of gnomes and just do what they do,’ she said.

Amy said she really enjoyed the logistics and organisational challenges of producing.

‘A lot of work went into pre-production, a lot my time went into organising things, and I really enjoyed facilitating so much talent and different skills. I was really lucky and happy to see that every thing worked out – it was amazing how everything came together,’ she said.

‘I never really knew that I could do that.’
