Expert puts the fun in finance

08/03/2024. By Carmelle Wilkinson.

Curtin graduate Ligwina Hananto

Ligwina Hananto, co-founder and CEO of QM Financial.

There are many things in life that pair well, wine and cheese, a movie and popcorn and even bed and breakfast.

But did you ever consider finance and comedy?

For Curtin business graduate Ligwina Hananto the seemingly unusual pairing is her bread and butter.

The founder and CEO at QM Financial is a popular stand-up comedian in her home country of Indonesia.

The mum of three has also participated in several marathons and dabbled in acting, appearing in three Indonesian films.

โ€œFinance and comedy may seem worlds apart but they both allow me to do what I love best and thatโ€™s talk to people and share stories,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œFollowing high school, I moved to Perth to study Finance and Accounting at Curtin, but it wasnโ€™t long before I changed to Marketing. Accounting just wasnโ€™t for me.

โ€œI actually met my husband while studying in Perth. But he went to another university, which I hold against him haha.โ€

Born in Bandung (West Java), Ligwina grew up in Sorowako, a small mining town in the middle of the South Sulawesi.

โ€œMy dad was a mining engineer, so I grew up outside of the city. Our home was near a large lake, and I spent a good deal of my time outdoors.

โ€œAs there werenโ€™t many good schools in the area, when it came time to attend high school my parents sent me to live with my grandma in Bandung.  Being in her mid-seventies, I soon started helping her manage the household.

โ€œFrom 17 I helped manage the money and pay for the bills. Iโ€™d go to the bank all the time, as there was not digital banking back then. I actually enjoyed it.โ€

Ligwina said it was then that the seed was planted to follow a career in finance.

Fast forward to 2024, and sheโ€™s a global financial trainer and leader, assisting corporations, small businesses and individuals with all their financial needs.

Through in-house and online training, educational programs and classes, Ligwina makes finance fun and practical.

โ€œI co-founded QM Financial 20 years ago to assist clients with improving their financial literacy and to continuously find improvements on how to work with money,โ€™โ€™ she said.

Curtin graduate Ligwina's finance sessions

Ligwina Hananto, co-founder and CEO of QM Financial.

โ€œWhen I first started teaching people about finance, I noticed a lot of people were uncomfortable to talk about money. And maybe it’s a cultural thing but talking about finances can be a bit taboo and can make you feel vulnerable.

โ€œSo, I started to make people feel more at ease by sharing stories and telling them something vulnerable to me. Iโ€™d end up making them laugh and it would immediately make them feel more comfortable.

โ€œI found laughter to be a great ice breaker, and when I entered a class for a two-hour financial session Iโ€™d open with a few jokes and skits to make everyone laugh and feel more relaxed.โ€

From balancing cheque books at day to creating belly laughs at night, Ligwina is as surprising as she is talented.

Curtin graduate Ligwina Hananto guest speaking at an event

Ligwinaโ€™s funny side shines in her stand-up comedy shows.

โ€œThe funny thing is my mumโ€™s side of the family is incredibly musical. My mum used to be a singer when she was younger, and my uncles are actually a famous Islamic pop band in Indonesia. I know, there are probably not too many of those around,โ€™โ€™ she laughed.

โ€œMy cousins are all very musical too. One of them is a music director and another is a violinist and composer.

โ€œSo, yes growing up amongst such talent was a bit hard. I canโ€™t hum let alone sing. And I learnt classical piano for seven years, and still canโ€™t play a single tune.

โ€œI was always the nerdy one. Iโ€™d often sit in the corner studying while my cousinโ€™s played music in my grandma’s house.

โ€œHowever, for the past 10 years Iโ€™ve been doing stand-up comedy and Iโ€™ve had a couple movie roles, so now Iโ€™m the famous one, and my cousins joke and tell me โ€˜you finally made itโ€™ haha.โ€

Ligwina said while her husband and kids had seen one of her family-friendly shows, she wasnโ€™t ready for her mum and dad to come watch just yet.

โ€œThey put me in higher education, I have a Masterโ€™s Degree in Investment Management, watching me do stand-up comedy would be a massive โ€˜what is she doing?โ€ moment,โ€™โ€™ she laughed.

โ€œThey are both in their seventies now, and they have been asking, so maybe Iโ€™ll have to prepare a show more suitable for an older crowd.โ€

With International Womenโ€™s Day upon us, Ligwina reflects on her educational journey as a Muslim woman from a third world country and her incredible support system who have cheered her on throughout her life.

Curtin graduate Ligwina Hananto

Ligwina encourages all women to upskill and embrace their natural talent this International Womenโ€™s Day.

โ€œEducation was always highly regarded in my family. My grandfather went to Stanford and set the example for the rest of the family,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œAttending university was never an option for me. It was a given.

โ€œI am very fortunate to have a great support system. I couldnโ€™t have launched a business or do stand-up without my supportive husband, parents, three children and mother-in-law.โ€

As for financial tips, Ligwina encouraged all women to learn the basics.

โ€œItโ€™s important to know the basics, because then you can confidently manage your householdโ€™s expenditure,โ€ she said.

โ€œCreate a budget and set limits for how much youโ€™ll spend per month on things such as food, rent/mortgage, holidays, entertainment and even coffees.

โ€œMore times than not, people donโ€™t have a money problem, they have an expense problem. And they are spending more than what they are making.โ€

Ligwina also encouraged women this International Womenโ€™s Day to upskill throughout their life.

โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid to upskill. My knowledge and experience have expanded exponentially over the years, and Iโ€™ve been able to expand my credentials,โ€™โ€™ she said.

โ€œFind your true inner strength and explore that further.

โ€œFor me that has always been storytelling. While finance is the knowledge I acquired at university, storytelling has allowed me to become a financial trainer and retell stories as a comedian.

โ€œI now generate two forms of income from my biggest strength.โ€

Ligwina recently performed at the Edinburgh Fringeย Festival and United Nation Stand Up for Human Rights Show in Bangkok.

In 2011, she was awarded Australian Alumni Award by the Australian Embassy Jakarta and in 2021 was selected to be part of the Eisenhower Fellowships 2021.

Ligwina said thanks to her undergraduate degree at Curtin she gained the confidence to analyse, make better decisions and lead a fulfilling and rewarding life.

Meet Curtin Electrical and Electronics Engineering graduate Haniff Soorian Pagavalan who is pursuing his dream as an Electrical Engineer at Western Power. โšก๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

Haniff was involved in Curtinโ€™s Internship Gateway Program, which gives organisations the chance to foster connections with highly motivated science and engineering students.

Through the program, your organisation will not only contribute to shaping the development of our industry-ready graduates but will also provide your team with the opportunity to develop their mentoring and leadership skills.

For Haniff, undertaking the internship was an invaluable experience that prepared him for the workforce. ๐ŸŽ“

โ€œI spent about three months as an intern and for the first month, they sent me into the workshop. I got to see how the switchboards were constructed.

In that experience, Iโ€™d say the most valuable thing was seeing how the drawings translated into the real physical thing. Seeing it in real life makes a lot of a difference and I learned that Iโ€™m more capable than I think I am,โ€ Haniff said.

Eric Carwardine has a special connection with Curtin University that spans 35 glorious years, from 1964 to 1999. ๐ŸŽ“

Last month, the Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences alumnus and former Curtin staff member took a trip down memory lane with us, visiting his old stomping grounds at our Bentley Campus.

โ€œIn the summer of 1964, I was part of the pioneering movement from St George's Terrace Perth to the Bentley campus.

โ€œSomewhere in my archives, I have photographic negatives of the construction of Building 306 which housed the departments of Chemistry, Biology, and Medical Technology, and was set amongst a pine plantation. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿงช

โ€œIn the basement of Building 306, there was a cafeteria and an ablutions block and several of us set up home in the ground floor chemistry laboratories, putting our sleeping bags under the fume hoods. With all the comforts of home, we could save traveling time as we set up the laboratories.โ€

Eric attended Perth Technical College before it became the Western Australian Institute of Technology in 1967, and later Curtin in 1985.

Eric now resides at SwanCare Tandara in East Victoria Park with his wife Heather and likes to keep active by creating beautiful jarrah furniture and writing his memoir.โœ ๐Ÿ““

โ€œAt the age of eighty years my quota of one billion heartbeats must be nearing exhaustion but before the counter reached zero, I had a task to perform, a pilgrimage to where my full-time employment started,โ€ he said.
