This bachelors level major provides a flexible and personalised approach to studying earth sciences with students able to explore the field through opportunities for immersive research experiences, industry placement and team-based projects. This course provides a flexible and personalised approach to studying Earth Science with students able to explore the field through for-credit immersive research experiences and interdisciplinary team-based projects. Earth scientists are essential to the resources and environmental industry and use sophisticated instruments for the analysis of earth and planetary materials. The Earth Science Major provides a body of knowledge in earth sciences and a range of skills necessary for a career in wide ranging industries dealing with earth materials. These skills are gained in Curtin’s Earth Science research groups and related laboratories that are amongst the best equipped in Australia.

What you'll learn

  • analyse challenging and multi-faceted problems in Earth Science using practical and theoretical methods to identify opportunities and find novel solutions.
  • communicate issues, approaches, ideas, findings and solutions concisely and coherently to professional and lay audiences via diverse media.
  • consider dynamic Earth Science issues from a global, ethical and socially responsible perspective.
  • work collaboratively and respectfully with colleagues from a range of backgrounds and recognise the cultural issues that impact research in Earth Science and peoples connection to country.
  • awareness of academic, industry and societal needs in Earth Science, and capacity to work professionally in a way that values and is valued by various stakeholders, e.g. sustainable Earth resource practices.
  • demonstrate knowledge of the nature of science, its methods and processes, and apply scientific principles and concepts to contribute new knowledge in Earth Science
