Reading time: 1 minute.

Curtin is making some changes to the way Turnitin (the text matching tool that checks for unoriginal material) is used in student assessments.

From 1 January 2026, the AI writing detection feature in Turnitin will be disabled, with effect across all campuses and study periods. This change is about fostering trust and clarity within a modern academic culture and continuously improving our assessments to ensure they are secure, fair, relevant and future-ready.

What this means for you now in 2025

  • Nothing changes this year – keep submitting your work through Turnitin as usual.
  • Your assignments will continue to be assessed fairly and consistently.
  • Ensure you follow assessment instructions regarding the appropriate use of Gen-AI

What this means for you in 2026

  • Nothing changes in how your assignments are submitted to Turnitin.
  • Only the Gen-AI detection feature of Turnitin will be disabled, the regular text-matching originality checks will remain active.
  • Your work will still be reviewed for adherence to academic integrity instructions and will continue to be assessed fairly and consistently.
  • We recommend you use the writing tools available to you, such as Curtin Grammarly and Authorship function.
  • Ensure you follow assessment instructions regarding the appropriate use of Gen-AI.
  • Over time, you may notice new approaches to assessment that reflect how workplaces use digital tools, including AI.

Using AI responsibly

If AI tools are allowed in an assessment, remember:

  • AI should support your learning, not replace it.
  • You are always responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the work you submit.
  • Be transparent about any AI use, following your unit/course instructions. Refer to UniSkills to learn more about referencing Gen-AI.

Curtin is committed to ensuring your assessments are fair and that your achievements reflect your own capabilities. Academic integrity procedures remain in place and will continue to be applied consistently.

When in doubt about using AI in an assessment, check with your unit coordinator or visit the Academic Integrity page for help.
