Curtin University and Murdoch University are collaborating on a new research project that explores the cultural and linguistic challenges faced by Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students and their supervisors.

The project, titled “Thank you for your hostility”, aims to bridge the gap between students’ diverse backgrounds and the new academic environment. It places HDR students at the centre as co-researchers, working alongside academics to create a more inclusive and supportive learning atmosphere.

Through qualitative research and a comprehensive ‘Needs Analysis’, the initiative will identify areas where support is most needed. The project will also explore how artificial intelligence can be used to assist cultural and linguistic navigation, with the goal of improving intercultural competence, academic success, and the overall wellbeing of diverse student populations.

What will I need to do?

  • Join a fully catered free Language and Culture Forum in Curtin Lantern (Curtin Library, Level 7) on 19 September at 10am to 1pm
  • Take part in a 3-hour focus group discussion at the forum
  • Optionally volunteer for a one-on-one interview (up to 60 minutes) at a later date

What will I receive?

A gift card will be provided as a thank you for your time if you attend a 60-minute interview.

This research underscores Curtin’s commitment to championing diversity, inclusion, and belonging for all HDR students and their supervisors.
