Last week, Kalgoorlie came alive with excitement as families gathered for Science After Dark, a community event designed to showcase the fun side of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) as part of National Science Week. Our Curtin Volunteers! helped to turn the open space outside the Museum of the Goldfields into mini laboratories to spark the curiosity of the next generation of innovators.

The goal of Science After Dark was simple but powerful: show kids and families that STEM isn’t just something you read about in a textbook; it’s hands-on, exciting and part of everyday life. Through interactive experiments and activities, young participants got to see, touch and test ideas for themselves.

For Curtin students, the event was more than just volunteering. It was a chance to share knowledge and passion in a way that had an immediate impact. The room was buzzing with glowing chemical reactions and curious young minds asking endless questions about how and why things worked. You could almost see future scientists and engineers in the making!

What made the night stand out wasn’t just the experiments – it was the atmosphere. Families explored together, kids encouraged each other to try new activities and our Curtin Volunteers stepped into the role of mentors and guides. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to share their passion and knowledge in a meaningful, real-world setting.

The event highlights what Curtin Volunteers is all about: using skills and enthusiasm to strengthen communities. Sharing STEM in a practical, hands-on way isn’t just fun, it has long-term impact.

We’re proud to support initiatives like Science After Dark, which connect our students with regional communities and help inspire the next generation of problem-solvers. Events like these remind us that learning doesn’t have to be formal to be meaningful. Sometimes, all it takes is a spark of curiosity, and a group of passionate volunteers, to set someone on a new path.

If you’re a Curtin student looking for a way to make a difference, keep an eye out for future opportunities with Curtin Volunteers! at our Perth and Kalgoorlie campuses. You might be surprised at just how rewarding it feels to be part of moments like this one.
