The Allison Taylor Single Mum Scholarship

We hope that you were able to find a moment to send your postcard, showcasing the artwork created by Felix, the grandson of Allison Taylor, an extraordinary woman from the Curtin community, whose legacy is continuing to meaningfully impact our students through the Allison Taylor Single Mum Scholarship.

Being a mum is one of the hardest, most rewarding jobs in the world. But being a single mum presents even greater pressures and stress, making it difficult to complete a university education.

The Allison Taylor Single Mum Scholarship will alleviate the financial burden for single mums in need by empowering them with financial support and resources as they pursue their degrees at Curtin. The Scholarship will empower these kindred spirits of Allison’s to pursue their higher education dreams and help transform their lives, and the lives of their children.

Menopause in the workplace

There isn’t a single policy that can rectify the gendered barriers discussed at the event, but some of the policy changes we would like to see would be:

We heard a lot at the event and I have heard this a lot before about the need to build safety and trust in our workplaces and for me this is the key point. As well as the continuous feedback loop of measure and improve – as I said yesterday, what gets measured gets focus.

In addition, time didn’t allow me to address some of the easy solutions the women leaving work as a result of menopause.

So, a summary of the initial steps to change the outcome could be shared together with a link to our website and an ability to download the attached pdf.

What do you do to stop women retiring early due to menopause?
What we know from learnings from the UK and the USA is that managers and supportive leadership are key. We also know that the solution is layered.

We believe that there are four pillars of support;

1. Physical wellbeing
2. Mental Health wellbeing and sleep
3. Financial wellbeing
4. Social connection, meaning and purpose, and

What a company can do is look at it from a governance level – providing policy, strategy and frameworks. Which then sets the scene for education, culture shifts, behaviour change, medical support as required. The first step is consulting with your workforce so you can meet them where they are at. When you have the right governance in place, then an employee can advocate for the right solution to suit their circumstances.

For better physical and mental wellbeing, we need to provide;

1. Evidence based education for both those going through menopause and for those supporting them
2. Support a culture shift (leading with understanding and connection) that builds trust and safety
3. Promote self-advocacy – women know what is best for their individual needs
4. Take a holistic approach (that consults all stakeholders), and
5. We need to measure outcomes, what gets measured gets focus
