The book “Food in a Planetary Emergency” by Professor Dora Marinova and Dr Diana Bogueva won the Best of the Best – The Future of Food prestigious award at the 28th International Gourmand Awards in Umeå, Sweden. Edouard Cointreau – the Chair of the Awards Committee, described the book as an “uncompromising and challenging vision for humanity in the 21st Century”.

Published in 2022 by Springer, the book “Food in a Planetary Emergency” describes the challenges humanity faces with its current food systems and offers alternative avenues to improve food production and consumption. It provides an in-depth analysis of current trends at the global and industry level in relation to sustainability and diets, climate change and the need for transition towards more plant-based food choices. By embracing flexitarianism, we can improve human health and environmental well-being. New technologies for alternative proteins and the need for social marketing are put forward as ways to counteract the current high reliance on livestock-sourced foods. Mr Cointreau emphasised that “it takes a lot of courage to write and publish such a comprehensive book. Dora Marinova and Diana Bogueva bring together an immense amount of data, figures and analysis encouraging the reader to take part in a global movement”.

Samuel Kwon, the Australian Consul in Sweden, who attended the ceremony congratulated the winners and described how proud of Australian science he is. Dora Marinova and Diana Bogueva accepted the award as a recognition of their work and said that this shows there is an increasing understanding of the seriousness of the issues we face. It also gives them hope we can find solutions and see behavioural changes, including the young generations.

The Gourmand Awards Committee screened over 100,000 books from 230 countries and regions across the world to decide the 2023 winners.
