Become a New to Curtin mentor

Becoming a New to Curtin mentor gives you the opportunity to help new students, as well as develop valuable skills for your studies and future work.

As a mentor, you’ll be providing one-on-one support to new students who opt in to the Mentor program throughout the study period.

By sharing your experience and answering questions, you’ll be helping our
students navigate their first study period at Curtin!

When interacting with students at the Mentor Hub during extended Orientation, the information that I provide students must be short and concise so that it can be easily understood and remembered. Application dates

Applications for Semester 1, 2027 will open in October 2026. In the meantime, if you are keen to support the successful transition of new students starting their journey here at Curtin, we strongly encourage you to express your interest via UniHub. The Central Mentoring Team will be in contact when applications open.

Eligibility

Be a currently enrolled student who has completed at least one semester (100 credits) in the area you wish to mentor for.
Have a proactive and positive attitude with a commitment to lifelong learning.
Be a good communicator and able to relate to new students.
Be confident, willing and able to assist others without compromising your own academic studies.
Be reliable, trustworthy and able to maintain appropriate boundaries.

Expectations and responsibilities

There are a range of expectations that form your role as a New to Curtin Mentor.

Complete the compulsory program training and leadership workshop requirement, check-in tasks and final evaluation.
Provide ongoing one-on-one support to your assigned mentees throughout the semester, in particular the first five (5) weeks of the semester.
Participate in your Faculty’s Orientation Week program.
Participate in activities which enhance the sense of community at Curtin.
Comply with the role boundaries of being a mentor as described in the mentor training.
Respect the confidentiality of private information about mentees.
Behave in a manner consistent with the Student Charter and in compliance with other relevant Curtin policies as described on the Curtin Policies website.
Report suspected unethical or criminal behaviour to the Integrity and Standard Unit (ISU) at Curtin. You may seek assistance with this from Student Wellbeing.
Refer concerns or conflicts arising in the mentoring relationship to the New to Curtin Mentor Program Team.
Disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest relating to your mentoring role to the New to Curtin Mentor Program Team as soon as it arises.
Not seek any form of remuneration from mentees in your role as a mentor.
Advise the New to Curtin Mentor Program Team in a timely manner of your need to change your involvement in the program or if any of the information above changes.

OUA students

Application dates

Applications for Study Period 4 for OUA students will open at the end of October 2026. In the meantime, if you are keen to support the successful transition of new students starting their OUA journey at Curtin, we strongly encourage you to express your interest via UniHub. The Central Mentoring Team will be in contact when applications open.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an online group interview. All successful applicants are then required to complete the compulsory online training modules.

Be a currently enrolled student who has completed at least six months of studies or 100 credits through Curtin University, in the course or area you wish to mentor for.
Have a proactive and positive attitude with a commitment to lifelong learning.
Be a good communicator and able to relate to new students.
Be confident, willing and able to assist others without compromising your own academic studies.
Be reliable, trustworthy and able to maintain appropriate boundaries.
