Addressing the nurses’ shortage in regional WA
A key to thriving rural and remote communities is ensuring a sustainable rural health workforce. Local nurses possess a deep understanding of their communities and their specific health challenges.
The pressure on rural health services to meet the growing demand for skilled nursing care is greater than ever. Local enrolled nurses, however, often lack the opportunity to upskill in their hometowns, limiting their ability to achieve their full potential.
Supporting home grown talent to undertake their registered nursing degree at the Curtin Kalgoorlie campus will keep future Registered Nurses (RNs) in the local area. This will ensure the provision of culturally informed, quality healthcare that will support the improvement of health outcomes in our local rural and remote populations.
By joining forces, we can support the next generation of Registered Nurses to remain within their communities. Investing in local students to advance their nursing studies has the potential to bring immense benefits to the towns of the Goldfields.
These benefits include a more stable and resilient workforce, one that is embedded within the community, and who contribute to the social and economic capital of the region.

Let’s keep care close to home!
At Curtin Kalgoorlie, students can now complete the Bachelor of Science, Nursing (Enrolled Nursing to Registered Nursing stream) degree in the Goldfields-Esperance region.
Nursing students at Curtin Kalgoorlie are equipped with what they need to succeed, including full access to campus facilities, academic workshops, student wellbeing services, and wrap around support from Curtin staff and the Kalgoorlie based Goldfields University Department of Rural Health team.
In the current economic climate, many Enrolled Nurses (ENs) are unable to commit to upskilling through this conversion degree, given the immediate need to take on extra shifts and overtime to alleviate financial pressures.
Investing in our home grown talent
The Home Grown Nursing Scholarship program makes it easier for local students to complete the Bachelor of Science, Nursing (EN to RN stream) at Curtin Kalgoorlie.
Scholarships provide vital funds for students, enhancing their ability to concentrate on their studies.
This scholarship provides students with $10,000 per year, over two-and-a-half years for this conversion degree, totalling $25,000 per scholarship.

We invite you to reduce the financial pressures on our future nurses and in doing so, support these students to fulfil their dreams to become qualified RNs while living at or close to home.
We would be delighted to discuss this scholarship opportunity with you and shape it to suit your circumstances.
