Autism, self-harm and mental health support research
The project
According to recent studies, autistic people are almost three times more likely to die by suicide than those who are not autistic. Understanding self-harm and being able to appropriately support people who self-harm is important in preventing suicide, however autistic people struggle to have their self-harm recognised and often do not receive the support they need. Suicide prevention and support for those who self-harm must address the needs and experiences of autistic adults. Researchers at Curtin are undertaking research to understand 1) the experiences of self-harm amongst autistic people and how this compares to other behaviours that help people self-regulate, and 2) identify what makes accessing support easier/harder for autistic people who self-harm.
The involvement opportunity
The researchers would like to form an Advisory Group to assist in:
- the design of the research material (e.g. interview questions)
- recruiting participants via word of mouth
- discussion of the findings
- sharing the findings
Members of the Advisory Group may also be invited to take part in the research as participants.
Skills and experience
The researchers would like to involve autistic* adults who have self-harmed and/or have engaged with the mental health system, and close friends/loved ones of autistic people.
Previous experience in a research advisory role is desirable but not necessary.
You need to reside in WA.
*Open to people who have either received a formal diagnosis or self-identify as being autistic/having autism
Other information
Three one-hour meetings will be held across the remainder of the year. Advisory Group members may also be invited to provide feedback or engage via email sporadically.
Meetings will be held at the Curtin Bentley campus or online via Microsoft Teams.
An honorarium of $37.50/hour is offered to Advisory Group members.
The group will be collaborative in nature, with a neuro-affirming approach being central to how it is run. Support will be provided based on individual needs.
