We’re pleased to share that the Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) has successfully secured agreements with all four major academic publishers for 2026, including a recently finalised in-principle agreement with Elsevier.
Following our November update about the Taylor & Francis agreement and the pause in Elsevier negotiations, CAUL has now reached in-principle agreements with Taylor & Francis, Springer Nature, Wiley, and Elsevier. These agreements represent a significant milestone for Australian and New Zealand universities, delivering more sustainable, equitable and transparent access to research and academic publishing services.
The Taylor & Francis, Springer Nature and Wiley agreements provide comprehensive open access publishing options at no individual cost to authors. This includes uncapped hybrid open access publishing across full portfolios and support for gold open access journals.
For Elsevier specifically, the agreement delivers uncapped hybrid open access across their entire portfolio, including prestigious titles such as Cell Press and The Lancet. However, gold open access journals are not included in the agreement.
An updated list of the 2026 open access agreements and journal title details will be made available in the Library Research Toolkit as soon as possible.
Students and staff will maintain uninterrupted access to journals from all four publishers, including Elsevier’s 1659 academic journals. The contingency plans we prepared are no longer needed.
The Library will continue supporting your publishing, teaching and research needs as these agreements take effect in 2026. Contact us at libraryhelp@curtin.edu.au with any questions about these agreements.
