Due to COVID 19, Psychological and Counselling Services has reviewed its service delivery model to adapt to the changing landscape.

As of semester 2, 2021, the following changes will be implemented:

How to book an appointment

You can book an appointment by calling (08) 9266 7850 or by visiting reception on level 2 of Building 109.

Reception hours

Monday to Thursday: 8.30am to 5.00pm

Friday: 8.00am to 4.30pm

There may be a waiting period of up to four weeks during our busy times of the year.

Appointment hours

Monday to Thursday: 8.00am to 6.00pm

Friday: 8.00am to 4.30pm

Your initial appointment

If you’re a student who’s new to the service or you haven’t had an appointment in the last six months, you must first have a 20-minute session with our triage counsellor. They will conduct a brief assessment of your needs, and if required schedule a follow up appointment based on the urgency and complexity of your situation. It’s important that you tell the triage counsellor as much information as possible about your situation and what you are seeking. Session times work on a first-come, first-served basis, and booking commences from 8:30am. Once triage is full for the day, you will be asked to phone or return the next day. Triage sessions are held between 9.00am and 15.00pm, Monday to Friday.

You can book an appointment with the triage counsellor via phone on (08) 9266 7850. Your session can be face-to-face or by telephone. If you cannot attend face-to-face because you are living outside of Perth, are on placement, have work commitments, you’re unwell, or you have travel restrictions you will be able to have a phone triage appointment.

Once you have an appointment booked you will be asked to complete a registration form, to read and agree with our confidentiality statement.

Will I have to pay for my consultations?

Psychological and Counselling Service does not charge any out-of-pocket expenses to students. However, all students must present a valid Medicare card or Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) card. Your first 4 sessions will not be billed. However, you may be asked to get a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP for further sessions if it is indicated. How can I get a Mental Health Care Plan?

Your GP can provide a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). If you don’t have a regular GP you can make an appointment at the University Health Service, or a GP of your choice. When making an appointment with your GP let them know you need a longer consultation. This will allow enough time to complete the plan.

What if I can’t get a Mental Health Care Plan, or I run over the available sessions, can I still have access to a psychologist?

No student will be denied care because of limits to Medicare or OSHC. All decisions about ongoing care will be based on individual clinical needs.

What do I need to bring to an appointment?

Once you have a MHCP, please give it to the psychologist at your next appointment. If your appointment is by Telehealth, you can email a copy to: or ask your GP service to fax it to: (08) 9266 3052.
