At their core, martial arts are about more than just kicks and punches. They’re practices designed to connect the mind, body, and spirit in unique ways, offering a meaningful way to challenge yourself.

They teach self-defence and build strength, coordination, and endurance. But just as importantly, they sharpen mental focus, boost confidence, and relieve stress. It’s a full-body workout and a mindset shift rolled into one!

If you’re looking for a way to stay active that’s both rewarding and engaging, martial arts are a fun and empowering path to explore. And Curtin offer a variety of martial arts programs and clubs you can get involved with.

Curtin Experiences

Curtin Sport and Recreation, alongside our affiliate clubs, run 5-week long programs designed to teach the fundamentals of different sports. This includes some martial arts such as:

Beginner Shorinji Kempo

This modern Japanese martial art blends self-defence with Zen philosophy for both physical and mental training. It combines hard and soft techniques, guided by compassionate strength, building confidence and character whilst emphasising partner work and helping others, instead of dominating them.

If these sound like something you’d be interested in, then you may want to consider checking out Kickstart Karate and/or beginner Shorinji Kempo during block 1 of Curtin Experiences for just $18.75 for students!

Shorinji Kempo:

  • Every Wednesday in the Curtin stadium studio from 5pm to 6pm

Curtin Kendo Club

The Curtin Kendo club is also a great way to get involved with martial arts here at Curtin. This Japanese martial art derives from Samurai swordsmanship. It uses bamboo swords called Shinai, and protective armour for full body/contact practices. Kendo training aims to challenge participants to constantly improve their skills through correct instruction, whilst developing discipline, respect and focus.

The Curtin Kendo club meet in the Curtin Stadium. You can find out more and enquire about joining through the Facebook page.
