Meet Alicia, a self-professed extrovert and tourism and hospitality student. Originally from India, her academic journey was shaped by her unwavering desire to engage with the world and unravel the essence of human connection. Alicia first considered studying early childhood education, but her enthusiasm for engaging with diverse individuals steered her towards the vibrant field of tourism and hospitality. Hooked by the interactive nature of her studies, Alicia found herself embracing the world of human interaction and the richness of diverse cultures.

Transitioning to university life in Australia posed a fresh set of challenges for Alicia, primarily adapting to the academic environment. She initially grappled with the practical approach, but despite this, her tenacity and open-minded nature allowed her to acclimate to her new surroundings seamlessly.

Alicia’s university experience has been significantly enriched by her recent involvement in the John Curtin Weekend (JCW), a transformative volunteer program that saw her travel to Northam to volunteer with the Avon Valley Environmental Society.

“Back in India, I used to volunteer all the time in animal NGOs. I heard about the John Curtin Weekend and Curtin Volunteers! during orientation, and it was one of the things I was most excited about in my uni life. I went for it the moment I got the opportunity.”

Her time spent assisting with rehabilitating an island on the Avon River alongside a close-knit group left an undeniable mark on her. The bonding experiences, camaraderie and collective efforts shaped an unforgettable chapter of her university journey.

“I learned one thing about myself. I got to know that I can do anything if I push myself.”

Alicia’s spot in her John Curtin Weekend trip was funded by the Business and Law Faculty and she was grateful to have the funding that went towards such a fulfilling experience. For students who want to go on a JCW trip in the future, Alicia highly recommends it. “You connect so much with the people around you. You learn so much and when you finish the project, you feel so satisfied.”

As she eagerly ventures into the limitless possibilities of her university life, Alicia’s radiant spirit and genuine curiosity continue illuminating her path. With aspirations of travelling the world and an unwavering dedication to meaningful connections, Alicia’s journey unfolds with boundless enthusiasm and an open-hearted embrace of the diverse world around her.
