Reading time: 2 minutes.
I would like to warmly welcome you all to the start of 2026 and hope the break has given you time to rest, reconnect with the people who matter to you and prepare for the year ahead. Although many of you will not return to campus until February, I want to reach out now as we begin a new year together.
I know the horrific tragedy at Bondi and other deeply distressing events around the world recently, have shown us how quickly our sense of safety and belonging can be shaken. These times can be especially unsettling for those who experience antisemitism, racism, discrimination or exclusion in any form and I want to acknowledge that this may be a very difficult period for many in the Curtin community. In my experience, one of the most meaningful things we can do is simply check in with one another.
As you may be aware, the federal government has designated tomorrow, Thursday 22 January, a National Day of Mourning, to honour the victims and all those impacted by the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. The day’s theme is ‘Light will win, a gathering of unity and remembrance’. Organisations around Australia have been encouraged to fly their flags at half-mast and to light up buildings and Curtin will be participating in these ways.
In addition, the federal government invites all Australians to join in observing a minute of silence at 4:01pm AWST to remember the 15 innocent people whose lives and futures were cruelly stolen on 14 December 2025.
In my own reflections over the break, I’ve been reminded of the power of strong, connected communities to support one another through moments of great need. I am proud to lead a university grounded in respect, integrity and courage, and I know these values are reflected in the way we look out for one another.
