Jasmine Middleton recently joined the Library as Librarian in the Research Services team. We spoke to Jasmine to learn more about her background, work experience and role.

I’m a classical musician and have worked as a freelance violinist for the last ten years, before stepping into the realm of public and academic libraries.

In my music career I have performed with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO), Perth Symphony Orchestra, WA Philharmonic Orchestra, as a session musician with artists, and in various string quartets.

I’ve had the opportunity to tour across WA to regional areas, interstate to perform with musicians around Australia, and internationally for concerts in Singapore, Japan, and China. Although, my favourite experience would have to be a community concert up north in Carnarvon to celebrate the solar eclipse.

Alongside performing, I’ve also worked as a violin teacher at schools and in my own teaching business, in arts administration, and as a journalist for CutCommon magazine.

I studied at the University of Western Australia (UWA) Conservatorium of Music, where I completed a Bachelor of Arts in violin performance with First Class Honours and a Master of Music in research.

It was during this time that I also began working as a Library Officer across the many UWA libraries on campus. This opened my eyes to the immeasurable value of libraries as the heart of a university, and to just how varied (and fun!) the job can be. I continued my work in public libraries for the next four years with the City of Canning and Bayswater, before completing my Graduate Diploma in Information and Library Science here at Curtin University.

In my current role as Librarian in the Research Services team at Curtin University Library, I’m excited to return to an academic environment from a new perspective to provide support to staff and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students.

It is inspiring to work with a knowledgeable and innovative team. As a Librarian I assist in the wide range of services we offer in research, data management, publishing, open scholarship, digital literacy, and academic skills development. I also contribute to projects, most recently in the implementation of the new Curtin Profiles platform and by organising events for the Graduate Research Advanced Skills Program (GRASP).

While there is always more to learn, I enjoy the challenge and the many opportunities to collaborate with other teams across the Library. I look forward to connecting with the wider Curtin University community.

When I’m not in the Library or playing violin, I love spending time in nature, searching for op shop treasures, and hanging out with my cats Oscar and Alfredo.
