Thinking about joining a student club?

Did you brave the weather yesterday and come along to Guild O-Day? If you did, you would have discovered the range of student clubs you can join.

The Curtin Student Guild currently supports over 100 student clubs and, while some are social or cultural in their focus, many of the academic and discipline specific clubs provide worthwhile opportunities for all things career related.

Networking opportunities

Academic and discipline specific clubs often organise and deliver careers nights, promote and present industry information and networking opportunities, and may be affiliated with alumni and professional associations to give you real insight into life within your profession beyond university.

Becoming an active and engaged member of these clubs can provide you with development opportunities and introduce you to people who may play a key role in your career planning. Joining a club will also help you meet likeminded people, make friendships and create memorable university experiences.

Development opportunities

Involvement in a student club, especially in a specified role, can help you develop those employability skills you hear us career development consultants continuously talk about!

As an example, think about the skills you could master by being your club’s event coordinator – leading a team, organising and running meetings, reaching a consensus among your club cohort, planning and developing an event including the associated budgets, delivering and managing said event (with all its unexpected on the day challenges), and following up on post event admin. Consider how these skills would then sound to an employer in your job application or interview, as well as how proactive and enthusiastic you will appear.

Join a club or start your own

So, if you’re looking for an opportunity to develop yourself professionally and personally, consider getting involved in a student club. If you can’t find one for your discipline or particular interest – you can create one! As ever, the Guild provides resources and guidance on how to set up and run your student club successfully.
