Aakanksha didn’t land her first Curtin job on the first try, and we’re sure that a lot of students can relate to that.

In the latest episode of I’m at Curtin, Now What?, we follow the process of getting a job in Australia. However, something you might have not considred is applying for a job at Curtin! Aakanksha’s journey and process of being an Earn While You Learn (EWYL) student may just be a little different from an outside job, but it could be an inspiration for you to check out what’s available right here on campus.

How It Started

Aakanksha was always on the lookout for work when she arrived in Australia. Like many international students, she applied for a bunch of jobs early on, both on and off campus. But it wasn’t until Curtin Orientation that she discovered UniHub.

After spotting a listing for a marketing assistant role, she applied, but got rejected. However, she went to the Curtin Careers team for advice. They suggested updating her resume… but the next day, she received a surprise call from a different Curtin team. They’d seen her application and wanted to interview her for a Gift Services Assistant role in the Advancement team.

She hadn’t even updated her resume. But the team liked what they saw, and after a smooth interview, Aakanksha landed the job. It was her first job in Australia, and one she still holds today.

What’s It Like Working at Curtin?

One word: flexibility.

Aakanksha loves that her role as an EWYL student works around her class schedule. Her managers understand she’s still learning, and that’s the point. The roles are designed to help students grow professionally, not to expect perfection.

There’s also a huge bonus in the form of mentorship. You’re supported, not pressured. You’re treated like a young professional, not a cog in a machine. And for Aakanksha, that support has made all the difference.

Why EWYL is Worth It

Beyond the obvious perk (yes, you get paid), EWYL roles give you real experience in a work environment that gets what it’s like to be a student. You’ll build skills, expand your network, and develop the confidence to apply for even more opportunities on or off campus.

Whether you’re in your first semester or about to graduate, Aakanksha believes it’s never too early to explore student jobs at Curtin. It’s how she got her start, and she’s still learning, growing, and thriving because of it.
