Curtin is excited to announce that Curtin’s current learning management system (LMS) Blackboard will be replaced by Canvas and rolled out to all students across all campuses, Australian and global, by 2027.
The goal in moving to this new platform is to introduce an improved user experience for both students and staff, simplifying teaching and enhancing student learning.
When will this affect me?
The majority of students will begin using Canvas from January 2027 for units that commence in 2027, until then they will continue to use Blackboard for their studies.
A small number of students who have units commencing in 2026 but concluding in 2027 will get exclusive early access to Canvas this year as their units will be migrated to the new LMS as a priority.
How will I know if I need to start using Canvas in 2026?
All students who are identified as being impacted by their 2026-2027 units moving to Canvas before the end of the year, will be communicated with via their student email to provide notice of this change and support in this transition.
Will I have to use both Blackboard and Canvas at the same time?
A small group of students in 2026 will be required to use both Blackboard and Canvas to access their learning materials for different units until the end of 2026, before the full transition over in January 2027. These students will be communicated with via their student email to provide notice and support in this transitional period.
This is an exciting project for Curtin in our teaching journey, and we look forward to sharing further updates about this change over the coming months.
