Tax time is prime time for scammers. Students are a growing target, especially those filing their first returns or working part-time. Scammers pretend to be from the Australian Taxation Office using fake emails, texts and calls to steal money or personal info.

DTS wants you to know what to watch for and how to protect your refund.

Our recommendations:

Be suspicious if:

  • The message is from someone you don’t know or looks dodgy
  • It pressures you to act quickly or threatens fines
  • It asks for your MyGov or ATO login details
  • It includes unexpected links or attachments
  • It wants payment outside of the official MyGov website or app

If you do spot a scam, let your mates know sharing helps everyone stay safe.

Further information:

Report scams via the ATO’s scam reporting page.
