Whether you have moved away from home and live on campus or are at uni a lot for class, lectures, and study, it can be both overwhelming and exciting to adapt to the change and newfound independence. And when trying to juggle study with your social life and going to class, it may seem as though there is no time for exercise and health.
But when staying active, you can improve both your physical and mental wellbeing, which can better your academic performance and lead to a more fulfilling university experience.
Here are a few ways to stay fit and healthy during your time here at Curtin:
Short and effective workouts
You don’t need long and physically demanding workouts each day to meet your fitness goals. Try doing some simple exercise routines, for even just a half an hour each day, anywhere that suits you.
Move while you study
There are lots of ways you can incorporate movement into your study time.
Try walking around whilst you revise your notes or do class readings. Or if you’ve got anything that doesn’t require your full attention, such as a watching a lecture or class recording, try moving around whilst you listen and watch.
It’s also useful to take short movement breaks whilst you work. Try studying for 25 minutes, then doing a little exercise for 5. Even just some star jumps or a short walk.
Use campus resources.
Another benefit of living so close to campus is that you are only a short distance from the Curtin Fitness Centre. On-campus residence have complimentary access to the Fitness Centre, so take advantage of the facilities and equipment.
Join a fitness class
Curtin Sport and Recreation offer many fitness classes and programs throughout the week, like group fitness and the Residence Cup (exclusively for those living on campus).
Keeping social while you exercise can help you to feel more motivated and meet new people around Curtin who may be living on campus just like you!
Take advantage of the short commute
If you’re living at any of the student accommodation on or around campus, you’re likely only a short distance from your classes. Take advantage of this by opting to walk to class instead of taking the bus or driving if it is safe and reasonable to do so.
Remember that staying healthy is not just about the exercise; maintaining healthy eating habits, where you can, will help fuel your body for both studying and working out!
Also, a good night’s rest is so important. When you get enough sleep, your body is able to recover and prepare you for the next day, allowing you to remain on top of your studying.
Staying fit and healthy during your time living at university doesn’t have to be time-consuming or feel like a burden in your already busy schedule. Set realistic goals and do what feels most comfortable for you!
