Kimberley communities draw inspiration from James Tylor

John Curtin Gallery 22 Jul 2025 12:30pm-1:30pm

Lunchtime Talk with award-winning participatory visual artist, human rights researcher and 2025 Forrest Foundation Creative Fellow, Lauri Parr

In June 2025, children and community from very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Kimberley communities, reflected on James Tylor’s collection with ‘Our World in Photos’, a photovoice project housed at Curtin’s School of Population Health. Inspired by James’ merging of photographic processes, participants engaged in a series of photography, paint and cyanotypes workshops to explore culture and country.

For this talk, Project Facilitator Lauri Parr, will share these community reflections, exploring the ongoing significance of James’ work in challenging the colonialism that photography often implicitly expresses as truth.

Lauri Parr is an award-winning participatory visual artist, human rights researcher and 2025 Forrest Foundation Creative Fellow. She uses ethical photography, photovoice and storytelling – to explore, celebrate and share counter discourses – with underrepresented communities. Her portfolio spans collaborations in 14 countries in 5 continents, with work shared strategically in galleries, public institutions, and the public to influence social change.
