Science and Engineering fieldwork and industry placement portal

What is an industry placement?

We use the term ‘industry placement’ for simplicity, as different experiences may be considered a WIL activity. Industry placement activities can include:

  • Fieldwork
  • Internships
  • Placements
  • Vacation work
  • Serviced learning
  • Professional practice
  • Practicum
  • Regular employment

Industry placement approvals

Industry placements attributed to your course or graduation (in-curricular) requirements must be approved by the WIL office before you commence your placement. These include:

  • NPSC3001 / 6002 – STEM Professional Practice unit
  • Exposure to Engineering Practice (EPEP) Logbooks for Bachelor of Engineering (Hons), Master of Professional Engineering and Bachelor of Technology students
  • SURV4000 – Cadastral Surveying unit

Request processing times

A standard processing time of up to 10 business days applies to placement requests.

Requests will be processed in the order they are received. Students who miss the processing deadline and have not received approval for their industry placement(s) will need to delay their start date until a formal approval is provided by the WIL office.

Before you apply

Before you apply, please ensure:

  • You have been made a formal placement offer
  • The placement must be undertaken within a safe environment
  • Your industry supervisor is willing to complete the necessary performance review for your unit (see your unit outline) or EPEP Logbook requirements (see EPEP Logbook link below). The university may contact your supervisor during the placement for a progress update
  • You have all the required documentation to attach to your application (see industry placement details below)

Industry placement requirements

All in-curricular industry placements must be approved by the WIL office via a placement request. All required documentation will be managed by the WIL office after you submit your placement request. If the activity is unpaid, Curtin will provide insurance under the Fair Work Act 2009 once a full review has been completed for the activity.

See the below requirements to prepare for the placement request approval process.
