The white logbook is only for students who will be graduating from Bachelor of Technology, while the yellow/blue logbook is for students who will be graduating from Engineering, including undergraduate students from single and double degree and postgraduate students.
Electrical Engineering Students
If you have completed your work experience prior 1 August 2017, you could follow the blue logbook submission guideline for that particular work experience.
For all work experience completed after 1 August 2017, you are required to follow the yellow logbook submission guideline.
Civil, Mechanical, Mechatronic and Industrial & Systems Engineering students
If you are admitted before Semester 2 2017, you can complete either the yellow or blue logbook. However if you were admitted after Semester 2 2017, you must use the yellow logbook only.
Chemical, Metallurgical, Mining and Petroleum Engineering students
If you were admitted before Semester 2 2017, you can complete either the yellow or blue logbook. However if you were admitted after Semester 2 2017, you must use the yellow logbook only.
Bachelor of Technology students
You are only required to complete 320 hours (inclusive of 16 weighted hours of PRES)
All Engineering students
You are required to complete 480 hours (inclusive of 16 weighted hours of PRES).
Yes, you could include that work experience as part of your work experience hours and you could claim up to a max of 0.25.
For example, if you are a student from engineering and requires 480 hours of work experience prior graduating, and you have worked in your part time job in a non-engineering field for 360 hours, you could claim 90 hours out of 480 hours (0.25 x 360hrs = 90hrs).
Please note that supporting documents, i.e. letter from employers will be required when claiming this EPEP component.
No, you can only submit in the final semester prior to you graduating.
If you are concerned, please email your logbook school. Please refer to question 11 below.
Please refer to page 4 and 5 of your respective logbook.
No, all students will need to complete a certain portion of their hours in the ‘ENG’ category under the supervision of a qualified engineer – please review the logbook matrix to determine the claim categories for your hours.
No, if you are studying Civil engineering, but you have work experience in the Mechanical field you can use these hours for your work experience claims.
Each semester, a portion of logbook submissions are not approved and students are asked to provide more information or make revisions to their documents. To improve the likelihood that your submission will be accepted the first time, here is a list of the top reasons why logbooks are rejected or delayed:
- Missing documents – not submitting all the required evidence, especially for part-time jobs, or not submitting the logbook itself
- Confirmation letters or payroll summaries that do not state the total number of hours
- Engineering reports that are too short – if you are claiming, say, 400 hours of ENG experience, you need to write 350×(400/40) to 500×(400/40) = 3500 to 5000 words
- Using the wrong categories for activities, or incorrectly applying the weighting factors and category limits (most common for PROF activities—please check first: Note 7)
- Engineering reports that are purely technical, lacking any personal reflection on the experiences (please follow the Reflective Report Writing Guidelines: Note 2)
- Engineering reports that do not say what you personally did (“I measured …”, “I attended …”), just stating how the business operates or what happens in each section
- For engineering confirmation letters, not stating the student’s report has been read and is accurate
- Short-form reports that are too long (>200 words) or not using the standard template
- Filling in a separate row for each week of a block of vacation work, rather than a single row for the whole block
- Providing 20+ payroll statements, rather than a payroll summary or company letter.
