A Western Australian with a passion for the seafood industry has won the Seafood Cooperative Research Centre’s David Thomason People’s Choice Award.

Research scientist at Curtin’s Centre of Excellence for Science, Seafood & Health (CESSH) Dr Janet Howieson, received the award at the Seafood CRC’s celebratory event held in Adelaide last week.

Seafood CRC Managing Director Dr Len Stephens, acknowledged Dr Howieson for her ability to focus on practical outcomes that would help the Australian seafood industry.

“Janet has worked on many excellent projects, including bringing prawn farmers and fishers together to develop and fund a marketing campaign,” says Stevens.
“She has produced valuable educational packages, contributed immensely to a whole range of supply chain and quality projects, and developed novel approaches to dealing with underutilised species.”

CESSH Director Professor Alexandra McManus, said that Dr Howieson had made a positive impact to the industry during her time at CESSH.
“Janet has done a remarkable job over the past seven years in facilitating partnerships within the seafood industry that have resulted in substantial changes to practice, with clear benefits to all involved,” says McManus.

“It is also fitting that she should receive the inaugural award dedicated to the late David Thomason, who was a friend and mentor.”
The CRC program supports collaboration between researchers, industries, communities and governments to solve major challenges facing Australia, many of which are global challenges.
