Four Curtin leaders in their fields have been named finalists in the prestigious Premier’s Science Awards, which celebrate WA’s best and brightest contributions to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Curtin Professor Stephen van Leeuwen, Australia’s first Indigenous Chair for Biodiversity and Environmental Science, is a finalist in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scientist of the Year.

Professor Cathryn Trott, from the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy and CSIRO, was named a finalist in the Mid-Career Scientist of the Year category.

Dr Xiaomin Xu, a Senior Lecturer at Curtin’s Western Australian School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering, is in the running to be named Early Career Scientist of the Year.

Dr Rina Wong (Fu), from Curtin’s Faculty of Health Sciences, was also recognised as a finalist in the STEM Educator of the Year (Tertiary) category.

Curtin University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research Professor Lindy Fitzgerald congratulated the Curtin finalists acknowledged among the State’s best and brightest.

“The Premier’s Science Awards recognise and celebrate the very best of outstanding scientific research and engagement taking place in WA,” Professor Fitzgerald said.

“Curtin is proudly home to multiple leaders in their fields, so I’m thrilled these finalists have been named among the State’s finest contributors to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

The Premier’s Science Awards recognise WA scientists, researchers, STEM tertiary students, STEM teachers and educators, and STEM engagement providers.

Over the years, awards alumni have become important ambassadors for the State, helping to inspire future generations to take up courses and careers in STEM.

The winners will be announced at a special gala ceremony held later this year.
