Curtin University is delighted to announce the appointment of highly regarded director David Lock as its next Chancellor, commencing April 2026.
A trailblazer across Australia’s agribusiness, infrastructure and education sectors, Mr Lock brings a wealth of experience and a passion for innovation to Curtin’s highest ceremonial office.
As Chair of Curtin’s Faculty of Business and Law Advisory Council since 2021, Mr Lock has already played a pivotal role in shaping the University’s strategic direction. His leadership currently extends across the boards of CBH Group, Harvest Road Group and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He has previously been on the boards of Water Corporation, Interflour Holdings Group (Singapore) and Marine Stewardship Council (London). He is also a proud Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Mr Lock’s career is marked by a commitment to excellence, good governance and transformation. He has steered major organisations as CEO and Managing Director, championed sustainability and growth and earned national recognition as the NAB Agribusiness Leader of the Year and an Australian Export Hero.
Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said Mr Lock’s appointment builds on the exceptional leadership of Curtin’s most recent Chancellors, Dr Vanessa Guthrie and Dr Andrew Crane.
“Curtin has been incredibly fortunate to benefit from strong, thoughtful and steady stewardship on its Council and we warmly welcome the guidance and perspective our new Chancellor will bring,” Professor Hayne said.
“David is a visionary leader whose energy and insight will help propel Curtin into its next phase. His deep understanding of industry, governance and the power of education will be invaluable as we continue to challenge convention and make a difference locally and globally.”
Mr Lock said he was honoured to take on the role of Chancellor at such a dynamic and future-focused university.
“Curtin is a place where bold ideas thrive and diverse communities come together to create real impact. I am thrilled to join Curtin’s Council, staff, students and alumni in shaping the next era of achievement and discovery,” Mr Lock said.
Outgoing Chancellor Dr Vanessa Guthrie AO said she was pleased to welcome Mr Lock as her successor.
“David brings strong commercial acumen and a deep appreciation for Curtin’s role in driving opportunity and impact. His steady, pragmatic leadership style will serve the University exceptionally well,” Dr Guthrie said.
“It has been a profound privilege to serve as Chancellor and to support Curtin’s success over the past years and I know the University is in very capable hands as it embarks on its next chapter.”
Curtin extends its heartfelt thanks to Dr Guthrie, whose leadership and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on the University.
Professor Hayne said Dr Guthrie has steered Curtin through a period of profound change in higher education, ensuring the University has remained strong, connected and future-ready.
“Vanessa has been a driving force for positive change at Curtin. Her integrity, wisdom and passion for education have enriched our University in countless ways. We are deeply grateful for her service and wish her every success in her future endeavours,” Professor Hayne said.
Mr Lock will officially assume the role of Chancellor on 1 April 2026.
