Curtin University is pleased to announce the appointment of two outstanding Curtin graduates, Emma Garlett and Matt Mueller, to its University Council.

Emma Garlett is a proud Nyungar-Nyiyaparli-Yamatji woman and a nationally recognised legal academic, business leader and advocate for First Nations empowerment.

As the first Aboriginal person to graduate from both the Curtin Law School and the Curtin Business School, Emma has forged a remarkable path in law, academia and the resources sector. She is the founder of Garlett Group, a national sustainability, digital and communications firm dedicated to amplifying Indigenous voices and promoting inclusion. She is a Non-Executive Director of the Perth Bears and Anglicare WA, and sits on the First Nations Governance Forum of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Emma is a sessional academic at the Curtin Law School and an Adjunct Professor at Federation University. She is also a regular columnist for The West Australian, using her platform to drive national conversations on justice, reconciliation and Indigenous excellence.

Matt Mueller is Managing Director of Voleno, an advisory firm focused on AI, technology and risk. He is also a Non-Executive Director of St John WA and The Fremantle Press. A Curtin alumnus, Matt holds a Master of Commerce (Distinction) and a Bachelor of Computer Science (Magna Cum Laude).

With more than two decades’ experience in advanced technologies, governance and risk, Matt has held senior leadership roles with Iluka Resources, Origin Energy and Western Power and has advised boards and executives across Australia, Singapore, New Zealand and the United States.

He is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia. Matt is a frequent presenter on technology, risk and AI, and has delivered courses for industry bodies and lectured at Curtin.

Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said the appointments would further strengthen the Council’s ability to guide Curtin’s future.

“Emma and Matt bring a remarkable breadth of experience and insight to Curtin’s Council,” Professor Hayne said.

“Emma is an accomplished business owner, lawyer and academic whose leadership spans the legal, business and resources sectors. Her entrepreneurial drive, legal expertise and dedication to advancing equity and opportunity make her an outstanding addition to Council. Matt’s expertise in technology, governance and risk will be invaluable as we navigate the opportunities and challenges of AI and a rapidly changing world.

“I am confident they will both make significant contributions in delivering on our mission to make a difference for our students, staff and the broader community.”
