Lady Brodie-Hall, wife of the late Sir Laurence Brodie-Hall, recently launched Curtin’s WA School of Mines Kalgoorlie Library, within the old heritage 1903 WA School of Mines building.
The library, designed to meet the needs of the academic community with print and electronic resources, modern technology and a variety of learning spaces, has the same academic resources as the library at the Perth campus, closely linking the campuses despite the 600km between them.
Vice Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the library was only one of a number of new infrastructure and equipment projects being undertaken on the Kalgoorlie Campus, including the mining equipment simulator and the new 64-seat state-of-the-art mine design laboratory, allowing students and staff to access over $10 million of specialist software.
“Our staff and students will now be much better equipped to undertake their research with a library close to their offices and teaching space,” Professor Terry said.
“Our mission is to change minds, lives and the world through leadership, innovation and excellence in teaching and research, and I have no doubt that the new library will help us achieve this.”
The previous library was operated by the Vocational Training and Education Centre (VTEC), now known as the Goldfields Institute of Technology. VTEC had been part of Curtin but when it moved to the State Government, a new library was needed in a Curtin-owned building.
Sir Laurence Brodie-Hall was foremost in fundraising for the Agricola College Halls of Residence, the Western Mining Conference Centre, the upgraded Student Guild facilities as well as his personal investments in assisting equipment purchases and establishing an Education Fund, which was the forerunner of the Brodie-Hall Research and Consultancy Centre.

Graduation ceremony and dinner
The Curtin Kalgoorlie graduation ceremony and dinner was held on 16 May at the WMC Conference Hall following the official opening of the library.
