International – Hong Kong sailing trip

Sunday 13 April – Hong Kong

The Curtin Alumni Hong Kong Chapter was recently invited to join the crew of the prestigious competitive sailing yacht, the Ragamuffin 90, for an evening sail around Hong Kong.

The grand prix race yacht had recently undergone a full refit and was delivered from its Philippines base to Hong Kong in preparation for the Rolex China Sea Race 2014, which it went on to win.

A few sailing celebrities attended the event including world-class Sailing Master David Witt, Campbell Knox, Craig Malouf, Justin Shave, Geoff Hill, Ferdinand Galleta and Liam Woulfe.

The sail started from Hong Kong’s Middle Island Yacht Club and circled around the southern coast of Hong Kong Island. During the cruise, Master Witt gave a lively reenactment of how his crew managed to escape a waterspout and severe weather during the 1998 Sydney to Hobart race.

The Curtin alumni on board had a fantastic day speaking with the crew and catching up with fellow Curtin graduates.

Good luck to the Ragamuffin 90 crew for their future ocean adventures!

During the lecture, Stelarc discussed the post-human condition with images, animations and a video of state-of-the-art research in robotics, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and his own projects and performances. If you were unable to attend you can watch the presentation and the Q&A on the Curtin Alumni YouTube playlist.

What alumni thought of this lecture:

“I am using these lectures as an introduction to university for my gifted and talented son. I am trying to find “the spark” that might engage him more and Stelarc’s lecture was an excellent melding of art and science. Usually, the artistic aspect is less appealing to me but this lecture enhanced my understanding of the collaborations which Stelarc is establishing. Thanks, I had a great evening.”

“Stelarc’s hour was much too short, he was phenomenal.”
